Brian 93957
Hi , does anyone know if there is more than one length of lower steering column on a mk 2 2000/2.5 with manual steering. I recently changed the rack on my car and had real diffculty getting the top uj (by the bulkhead) far enough up the splines to allow me to get the bolt through and clamp it tight. Even now although its quite secure it dosent go as far through the yoke as i would like. ive tried adjusting at the other end but if i move the column much on the lower splines i cant get the bolt in! The only thing ive noticed thats different is that the pinion on the new rack is a fraction shorter which is why i wondered if there might have been two types of manual racks and lower columns to match, or mis-match in my case!! Any ideas?
Philip Blank
i'm not personally aware of different types brian. there was a version with a large rubber donut thing that was used on the early autos but i had thought that all lower shafts other than that type were the same. someone else will no doubt respond if this is incorrect. shenderson
Try releasing the steering column tilt adjusting clamp and shove the upper column through the bulkhead a bit further to get better engagement of the splines. The lower shaft with the rubber donut is for PAS; manual steering have solid UJs.CheersSteve
