  1. The collect and keep process for roadbooks is a bit haphazard at times - weather, time and perhaps the pressure the marshals feel when 100+ smelly, tired and slightly grumpy Triumphists are bearing down on them all add to a stressful time. I'll take that one to the team and we'll see what we can come up with as guidance to marshals. I favour the plastic box filing system, like at Bude, to keep them in the order they arrived, to be called out once the control opens and returned in that same order. There should not be any appreciable delay and this isn't a race so whether you're first or last shouldn't matter (I know it does to some) as long as you're not out of time!
  2. We saw and actually paid £1.75 a litre for Optimax 🤬 Luckily? There was a £30 limit. It's the RBRR, you do what ever you have to do to get round! We don't generally speak of total costs, just make sure it's spread around multiple bank accounts, credit cards and cash set aside months in advance - if the financial department ever find out, there'll be an enquiry and we don't want that at Chinn Towers
  3. I'm interested - the proviso is that it has to be minimal extra effort for the organisers who's primary purpose is to get the real life event completed. think there's lots of activity that goes on in little corners of the digital world that could, with a little redirection of effort, be seen by a wider audience. What do you have in mind?
  4. Thanks Nick - these are all real examples of things people have either given up and retired with or have been labelled as 'fatal' yet been solved with what was to hand. "Carry a spare" is all well and good but I've noticed a growing number of people who either don't or if they do, they haven't the tools of basic know how to actually effect a repair - I love a 'trail fix' as the Yanks say, something finagled together that works well and is safe (ish) fashioned out of stuff from the bottom of the tool bag 🙂 A few more have popped into my head - you have a failed left hand fit alternator and someone gives you a spare right hand fit one - what next? The wiring issues are often solved properly with knowledge and patience but if you aren't electrically minded but you do have a roll of wire and some determination you can find a live feed, an earth point and direct wire rear lights to be on all the time - better than nowt. The dipped beam issue I had in mind was cured with a quick plug swapping to give dipped only - took all of 5 mins, amazing how quick you can be at the side of a busy road! A self preservation move that go the car and crew to safety for a more considered investigation and fix.
  5. @Craig Gingell I think we need to find a way to elevate usage of our new, fast website for events like the RBRR. I will be working on how to get live marshals info on here probably via Google docs published extracts (like the entry list) se we can all see what's happening as it happens - it's really tricky when you're on the run, driving, navigating, sleeping are the priorities!
  6. Has anyone found a low level runner solution for the Vitesse - the Bond seats in my Vitesse are fixed, fine for a single driver but not great when sharing the car. I don't want to add any height but I do need something - I don't have any runners to try so will need to buy/acquire something just thinking what others have figured out?
  7. I was thinking about this when in the RBRR, there are lots of issues that develop on events like the RBRR, 10CR and in everyday driving that you can fix on the side of the road even though many people think it's terminal. So I decide to put something together to at least show what can be achieved with just what's' to hand on the side of the road. Things like How do I deal with a failed alternator? My carb diaphragm has split, that's me out then, isn't it? What to do when a fuse blows and you have no spare? Kicked your 4 wheel nuts into a ditch in the dark, what now? I've just put £30 of diesel in my car, what do I do now? Dipped bean has failed, I only have full beam, what can I do? The head gaskets blow, there's nothing I can do about that, is there? I've got no rear lights, I can't drive like that can I? So, lets have your tips and tricks, remember be specific as you're not preaching the choir here, this is for the people who don't have the answers, just the questions 🙂
  8. I'm starting this here so all entrants can have their say about what went right and wrong with the RBRR 2021. It will be a considerate thread, with constructive comments, constructive criticism and workable suggestions. We will play nice and not be rude about suggestions, we will not close down opinions once expressed but will also not allow trolling. Everyone agree, yes OK let's get started 🙂 When people way "They should do something about ....." you are the "people" and your organising team the "they". The organising team are constantly talking and considering new ideas, locations and processes but to help you with a few 'rules' you may want to know that The Club and the RBRR is organised by unpaid amateurs, we are enthusiastic, keen and sometimes even capable but we aren't the most IT literate lot. The RBRR is popular, it sells out in a few hours, the limitations on numbers are generally down to the capacity of venues and the organisers ability to cope. We can't really make it bigger without significantly increasing the costs and probably losing something along the way - also, see 3 below. We can't make a huge profit from the RBRR - the Club is not VAT registered and cannot increase turnover - we get a limit set by the Club and we must stick to it. So, ideas of how to limit turnover from people who know the VAT rules are very welcome. Registering for VAT and making big profits would change the basics of the Club from amateur enthusiasts to money making business, a leap that the Sports Six Club made some years ago - they are a very different animal to CT (not better or worse, just different). As this is a RBRR thread I think we keep off that subject - unless you're a VAT expert 🙂 The RBRR is registered with Motor Sport UK and governed by their rules under a 'TAP' - a Touring Assembly Permit, the Club will always protect that validation so everything we do must stand up to official scrutiny. This is not Gumball and never will be. Third party services like FaceBook and WhatsApp are very difficult to control. Our work with RallyApLive is ongoing, we used WhatsApp differently this year and FaceBook was, as ever, a pain to deal with for all concerned - I did consider just turning it off at one point. CT members are generally not especially good at using these things so we need our technology to be fairly simple and easy to manage. For example, there are people, and I'll be polite here, "well meaning" people who feel it's their right to interfere with the event. Using FaceBook to set up an unofficial 'control'. Sadly, Club members get involved and this makes our lives all the more stressed - unscheduled stops that are neither authorised nor controlled by the RBRR team and are unknown Motor Sport UK constitute a serious risk to the ongoing running of the event. I'm interested in how the membership think we should deal with this? We've tried talking about it, we've tried asking politely, we have not yet tried banning anyone who participates or writing it into the rules that anyone attending will be withdrawn from the event. Withdrawals are inevitable but unnecessary - I think a separate thread is needed here as I want to draw on the collective experiences, good and bad, of the field. There were some heroic efforts on the weekend and so very noble entrants who went out of their way to help. One thing I would like specific thought on is that there were some participants who were mechanical snowflakes, loving the event but who had very little knowledge (or interest in some cases) in fixing their own problems. How do we educate/train/recondition these crews - the RBRR is best done with self sufficient crews who help each other but crews who always own their own problems. There's unlikely to be a transporter and mechanic following the field to fix cars due to the cost and practicalities of such an undertaking. This might get messy but if you are one of those entrants who are mechanically challenged or felt overwhelmed by problems, what do you think you and the Club can do to rectify this? I can't guarantee you won't get the mickey taken but I think it's fair to say that if you ask for help, you'll get it. If you put the problem onto someone else, you'll not enjoy the outcome - this is not about outing the ignorant, it's about educating and raising the standard for us all. I think that's enough to be going on with but you tell me what you experienced and how you think it could be better. Jason
  9. We had no fuel issues at all, in fact we were so impressed by the availability of E5 that we used one 20 litre Jerry can at JoG, not because we were short but because we wanted to drop the weight 🙂 We kept another 20 litre can full and never used it. We only drove through one station disappointed and that was not because it had no fuel, we were too early and it wasn't open! That was in Penzance on the way to Lands End so we had breakfast and returned later for an E5 fill up. We never had to compromise and used E5 all round, we also used lots of revs and made lots of noise 🙂 Kudos to all those who made it round, commiserations to those who didn't - the planning for the next one has already started (traditionally it starts in the bar about 30 seconds after getting the roadbook signed for the last time!). We are interested in all feedback about the event, good or bad but please, give us the facts. Suggestions are welcome too and we do consider them all, even ones from McJim 🙂
  10. Good idea, 2/3 of team Tracy Island are assembled amd just about to set off from Chinn Towers. That means event control is now in Nigel Abdullah’s hands. Good luck to all entrants! See you at the start.
  11. We we are down to only one Acclaim this year - a last minute TR7 stand in! Keep calm and fill up when necessary - the great British public just love a queue!
  12. Also, we are trialling this technology. We know it won't work for every use case BUT we can make it work for most when we know where it falls down - if we can get it fine tuned for our purposes it could be a great benefit to the club. We could conceivably administer and run our events the same platform cutting down the considerable manual overheard of the current process whilst also giving us the assurance that if a marshal doesn't make it to a control, the event integrity is preserved. Of course RallyAppLive was made for small competitive events and we are trying to use it for a large non-competitive event, so we are pushing the envelope a bit 😉 As long as we know what you did to break it, the learning will be worth it!
  13. If you email Tim he can send you previous emails. I’m away for the week and only have my phone so not so easy to do.
  14. It will only recognise the main entrants email as recorded when you entered. Ping me your entry number and phone number via PM or email and I’ll check
  15. No, that's one things I haven't been able to change on it but everything material has been backed up with emails or forum posts, so you should be OK.
  16. I've had a few requests to see the slides for the driver's briefing and I'm happy to share the deck. The caveat is that these slides are meant to be talked around and are prepared for that purpose alone, they do not counter anything in the road book and in case there is a discrepancy, the Road Book always wins 🙂 We use some Google maps screens hots in the presentation and the eagle eyed amongst you will see that the timings aren't always the same as the road book - that's because Google will take into account traffic conditions at the time we took the screen shot, adjusting ETAs accordingly. Not always delivering a representative timing - but they serve a purpose to help visualise the route. There are no speakers notes and no, we didn't do a video. If anyone would like to live stream the next one we do, please get in touch! The link is on the WhatsApp announce group - it's for participants only.
  17. Mrs C will bake me some cookies but mostly we will be eating roadside junk 🙂 There will be a Tebay meal in there and perhaps some sweeties. Defo no caffeine for me although Nigel loves it. Plenty of water at all times.
  18. You don't, you ask me 🙂 I have to make any changes manually so just ask.
  19. Yes you can, you just need to pay first - I will send you a link to do this now. J
  20. Apologies recently withdrawn teams, we've had a change of admin in the Treasurers and a couple of refunds seem to have failed to get the the right person to be actioned. I think I have identified them all and new requests have been made so the new admin process should sort them now. So, if you have recently withdrawn and are awaiting a refund, give it until Friday and if you have not received a credit in you bank, get in touch with me with your team number and name so I can chase through.
  21. UPDATE The RBRR2021 Broadcast Group has been running for a few months now, I've had no complaints and only a little feedback so I'm still thinking it is a useful tool. We've got 167 users on the group so that means a few co-drivers are on there too which is great. As we get ever closer to the run itself, this Broadcast Group will be invaluable to get in touch with you quickly so I would encourage at least one crew member to join. If you haven't signed up, please send me a personal message here and I will send you the link. Once again, this is not a group for discussion or for telling friends and family anything, it's a straight RBRR entrant group where the only posts will be from the organising team. So far, we've averaged 1 post a week so, as promised, we're not spamming you with loads of traffic 🙂 To address a couple of points that have been made; If WhatsApp notifications annoy you, you can turn them off - click on the heading of the group and you'll see some settings including a "mute" option. Messages will still appear, you'll just have to remember to look at them because apart from a visual clue, your phone won't remind you. Full details here https://www.whatsapp.com/ It's not compulsory, if you don't want WhatsApp you will just need to come here to the Forum for your updates. You will run the risk of missing out on breaking news on the run. Finally, on the subject of this forum, have you tried it on a smartphone yet? Have a go, it's really rather impressive!
  22. Yes watched it last night, Binky has been many years in the making and I've watched them all! I only wish I had that attention to detail!
