  3. ferny wrote:I was looking through old threads and you said you used a 2.3lt starter motor and a saloon spacer. There's only one seller with that on eBay at the moment (yes, other sources available) but was wondering how different the other models were. Not easy to tell unless you find someone who has already done it or you've got one of each in front of you! The Isuzu seems the easiest route... Yes - the 2.3 motor is easiest for a 4 cylinder Triumph because it means you don't need the conversion kit  - photo below is of mine with the two Triumph spacers beside it. I'd agree that you would need to compare any of the others by having them in front of you -  based on a quick look at what is available on Ebay I'd say not many of them are candidates - but these don't look too dissimilar (and cheaper than the one you found!): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ISUZU-TROOPER-STARTER-MOTOR-FROM-1984-1991-/330580432148?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4cf8211514 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ISUZU-CAMPO-KB-STARTER-MOTOR-FROM-1983-1990-/220803411475?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3368e8ae13 Mark
  4. Not an easy answer - they don't all work Watch out for those that rotate the wrong way - Subaru and some fitted to rover/mg for example (ask me how I know  :-/) I think Toyota are a safe bet .... but even then some are physically bigger so the usual conversion kits won't fit. I think the one I finally had success with for my saloon was from a Corolla - but will be interesting to hear what others have used . Mark
  5. Marcus - thanks for the reply. Diff in question is a 3.89, non ebay but unknown quantity nonetheless. I'll have a peep inside, although as I said originally, the hole does not seem to have penetrated yet (testing with a pin) . Do I assume that broken casings are only the result of something inside letting go first? Cheers, Mark
  6. There have been a couple of incidents recently with people knocking holes in the rear casing of their small chassis Triumph diffs - so I wonder if the experts on here could cast an eye over the picture below and let me know if this is likely to be a problem (now or in the future). The blemish at the back of the diff is a small pit / hole, about 7mm by 2 mm, although it  does not appear to go all the way through the casting.   The diff itself feels OK - not notchy at all and very little play - but I have not driven it and don't really want to fit it if likely to explode within a few miles. So the question is - could this just be a minor imperfection in the casting or is it a sign of imminent destruction? Sorry about the picture quality - will try to take a clearer shot later. Thanks, Mark
  7. I suspect they are flexible in all but the diameter.   When I spoke to them last year, they could offer most offsets and PCDs as long as you wanted 15" rims ... they have one or two standard wheel sizes but the offset and PCD can be machined to suit because of the amount of meat around the hub.   Mark
  8. This one requires no machining : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ISUZU-TROOPER-2-3-2-6-STARTER-MOTOR-S2036-/310331648088?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4841352858 Just use the aluminium spacer from a saloon instead of the 4-pot spacer. If you go for any of the other starters (Toyota etc) you will need to get parts machined. Mark
  9. Richard_B wrote:Ah sorry single rail, not three rail. Just out of curiosity, which input shaft does it have? Supplied by Mr Papworth - fine splines to run with the 1500 clutch
  10. Right - just to put the story straight, I have Vitesse/GT6 ratios in a Single rail box with overdrive.  And I'm running a 1300  engine and 4:11 diff. Originally, I had dizzy that was first set up for an 1147 Herald with no vacuum advance and who knows what advance curve - which gave no torque,  and coupled with 3:63 diff made pulling away interesting which is probably what Richard recalls. Since then, I have dropped to the 4:11 diff and had a Megajolt ignition installed, which with a lot of help from Nick, has made the car quite driveable (especially if you drive in socks and need a cushion to help you reach the pedals  ;D). As posted on the other thread, this is how it pulls away now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocb4GdGXShY&feature=youtu.be Mark
  11. MikeyB wrote:How do you get on with the ratios Mark - I have one of these conversion shafts and was seriously considering putting a GT6 box in the rally herald. I worried about 1st being too tall though. This is what it's like off the line - with a 4:11 diff. Nothing electric, but I think it makes up for that later on! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocb4GdGXShY&feature=youtu.be Mark
  12. ferny wrote:I'm sure it'll be fine. I couldn't get his into reverse either. see, he's known about it for almost a year now. ;) Oh yes --- I'd forgotten that it was you who broke the reverse gear  ;D
  13. MikeyB wrote:How do you get on with the ratios Mark - I have one of these conversion shafts and was seriously considering putting a GT6 box in the rally herald. I worried about 1st being too tall though. I like it now - as Matt says, it is quite nice not having to change gear on the autosolos.   Last year the engine had no torque at low revs so bogged down all the time.  However, with the megajolt that has changed and it is quite driveable now and once you are moving the close ratios are a real pleasure.   Still no way I can light up the tyres though and hill starts are interesting. 14. Alex wrote: Colin I believe its a Gt6 one.... does about 60 in 1st ;D Cheers Alex yes - GT6 ratios., but using a 4:11 diff at the moment so struggles to get to 50 in first now  ;) Colin - thanks for the thoughts - will need to take the top off I think to see if it's internals, otherwise I have to suspect the overdrive. James -  they had done a couple of thousand miles before hand  so should have been reasonably well scrubbed - just can't trust that Matthew to look after anything !  Am thinking that they might manage one more solo if I put them on the back though. Mark
  15. Yep - great day out.   But - it wasn't part of the deal to beat everyone using my car Matt!  I guess it at least shows what the car is capable of now that the Megajolt is working - I just need to learn how to drive  :'( Anyway ... this is what my tyres looked like at the end of the day having started life as a nearly new set : And this is how Matt finished them off http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4dDOUDiLKk&feature=youtu.be And to top it all off, I got home to find I have no reverse gear  :(.  Not sure how I can blame Matt for that but might be a while before the car sees another autosolo  :-/ Mark
  16. I shall be joining you all as well - if the car makes it there  :-/
  17. And finally a video of another hooligan in a red spitfire.  Sadly quite a slow one this time (looking after the car  :-/ ) http://youtu.be/-N8K7AqYNa8 Many thanks to Hayley for taking this one.
  18. And yet another video .... http://youtu.be/Ry62sH_MJAE and apologies .. forgot to mentioned that Matt was also first in class, adding yet another trophy to the collection he keeps in his boot for some reason.

  21. Just returned from an enjoyable (if wet) day at Castle Combe - thanks to Richard, James and Matt for pushing me into this! Here are a few photos (and a video if I can get it to work!) Here's the Video (I hope): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lsv1uBdpzNw&feature=youtu.be And finally a picture that Hazel managed to sneak into: Mark
  22. I did suggest this to My C a few weeks ago but not sure of the outcome.  YouTube is  full of clips of this bit of road - for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-iR92sUOiQ&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVRbEEARcDA And this article http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/dorset/4683276.stm Mark
  23. Hi All, As another first timer, I’d like to add my vote of thanks to the organisers for the huge amount of effort that clearly went into this event, to Richard for bullying me into taking part at long last, and to James for his support in getting me started.  This was a truly fantastic day and the best fun I have had in years. Clearly nothing to compare this with, but for me, the slaloms, 90 degree gates and roundabouts were absolutely brilliant.  And with only 1 wrong test the whole day they provided just the right level of technical challenge (although they did claim another set of new Yokohamas  :().   In fact – with a car that was distinctly challenged in straight line, I’m extremely happy with the courses.   It was this shortcoming with my car that seemed to put me into a ‘serious sub-competition’ with just one other competitor – Mr Tripod himself, making the day even more entertaining for me.  Trading fastest laps I think we ended up one place apart at the end of the day but the starts were sedate at best - SO embarrassing.  think I was lucky to reach the first cone at times.  (Any chance of a 50m rolling start next time instead of 50cm?) Once again, thanks to everybody involved – it was great to meet everyone and I’m now looking forward eagerly for the next opportunity to have a go. Mark
