  1. For those of us that can't make it to the dinner next month, will we be able to get our silverware another way? Richard
  2. You wouldn't ever regret that visit. I was there last year, went in at opening time, forgot lunch and they kicked me out at closing. If you arrive in a car more than 40 years old, you get special parking at the main entrance. Richard
  3. We're sixth on the reserve list but we have booked the time off work and I've booked a hotel in Lille with cancellation option until a week before. That covers all the bases I think!!
  4. Absolutely! My finishers "souvenir" is mostly the fact that we finished.
  5. And if anyone exceeds 70mph at any time, they can be reported to the Police immediately!
  6. I'm planning a shakedown trip from Bristol to Barcelona at the end of June. That should be far easier than the RBRR and will let me check that the car is okay with long runs on the Autoroute. I'll also get to cross the Millau Viaduct 🙂
  7. I suppose it's worth booking a hotel, even though we're 6th reserve so far....? Richard
  8. At the moment I'll try to keep mods 'in period' because I want to do some historic rally events and they sometimes like to see period documentation. The programmable ignition is a reasonably easy mod because it hangs off the electronic ignition and lets me try two different maps on one test run until I get it right. Then I can run with either of two maps, say for 95 or 98 fuel. One nice thing is that it uses the distributor in fixed mode - no dynamic or vacuum advance, so I get rid of the ignition timing variables introduced by Mr. Lucas. All the distributor does is give me four pulses per engine revolution and point the spark at the correct plug, the electronics do all the rest. Neil is always going to be way ahead though! My low rev mixture is overly rich, I haven't sussed why yet, I suspect the temperature compensators but I haven't worked out how I can permanently remove them. The more difficult mod is to make an alloy sump guard similar to the ones the works teams used on the 2.5PI rally cars.
  9. Hi OBE, I am going to fit an old Silicon Chip designed Programmable Ignition Module after Christmas. That one is quite simple, it just alters the advance against RPM with the addition of a crude vacuum sensor. I can map the mid-range advance and maximum advance, in this design the distributor weights are wired open and the springs removed, as well as the vacuum advance plate fixed. What advance did you find works best for you? I'm keeping the Strombergs, so my engine might be similar to yours although a bit less mileage! Richard
  10. I'll use the same Stag as I did for the 2016 RBRR - if enough of you drop out so I get on the entry list from 6th Reserve!! Richard
  11. Last time I did the RBRR there was no GPS, no mobile phones, no internet. Maybe that's why we didn't hear so much whining.
  12. Tonight I removed the steering column from the Stag, inspected it and put it back again. Not recommended for an evenings entertainment.
  13. Hoping I don't remain the only Stag to be carrying spares.....
  14. Er - isn't that what the Road Book is for? And you've done it six times already, should be a piece of cake this time!!
  15. Yes, but mines a new diff! Behaved perfectly for the first 150 miles, then started wailing like the proverbial banshee 50 miles from home. Grrrrr
  16. After the run back from the DM yesterday, I find I now have to change the diff. Again.
  17. Jobs left to do: Oil change for diff Finish wiring the headlight relays Check the speedo error and mark the dial accordingly Fit the new hardtop weatherseal Fit the hardtop Buy a cheap new tyre for the spare
  18. Decided to fit Yellowstuff pads for the run as two drivers aren't familiar with the Stag and it's automatic! A job for after work today..... And I'm told the new hardtop seal will be delivered this week so Saturday's run to the DM might be the last open run this year. Richard
  19. Pretty much what I thought, but one of my drivers is an ex-police driver so he was being a bit picky!!
  20. Have we all told our insurers that we're on the RBRR? Have we added the extra drivers to the policy - for the weekend?     Or for a longer period? What has been the response?
  21. I'm going over on Friday from Bristol with a spare seat if that helps. Richard
  22. I wonder how all the crews managed for all those events before GPS was available?
  23. Checked the valve clearances today. Not happy but decided they'll do until after the RBRR. CD player going in this afternoon to keep the troops happy.
