  1. Thanks Hazen. I've pretty much decided on the MG competition gear lever mounted toggle switch. I'm using a 1500 column otherwise I would have done the same as Jerry and had finger tip control without the hand leaving the steering wheel.
  2. We have just fitted a MK2 GT6 column mounted overdrive switch to Jerry's MK3 and he is absolutely delighted with it. This replaces the button on the gear lever. Rimmers supply the switch and the cowl to suit and installation was very easy. Best of all the tunnel didn't need to be removed.
  3. I've no idea whether it will work or not but i just thought it would be worth a try. The car has both  mechanical and  electric fans but with them running there doesn't seem to be a lot of air movement towards the back of the block. The only time vaporisation occurs is when the car is stationary which is when the electric fans will be cut in. The little fan with the pipe ducting does shift a lot of air so I'm hopeful.
  4. The intention is to fit the fan on the valance and this should blow cold air onto the coil and the petrol pump. I have no idea whether it will work but I've enjoyed making up the assembly for Jerry.
  5. Try our friend Hazen aka  byakk0. He is making them and I think he may have one with provision for a high level brake light. Drop him a PM
  6. We've already done that Brad and still have the problem albeit less so. But you must have an electric pump so perhaps the sleeving will cure it for you.
  7. I'm pretty sure Nick has got it right with his theory that the problem is fuel boiling in the mechanical pump. This is borne out by a story i heard recently that when John Kipping was on a rally in Africa they suffered with vaporisation and pouring cold water over the pump got them going again. If this is the case, an electric pump mounted away from the heat should be an answer. In the case of Jerry's car, I think we are going to try to fit the fan to cool the pump. There isn't a lot of room so it won't be straightforward.
  8. Is there an easy way to identify a GT6 tower as opposed to a Spitfire one? I know the GT6 towers allow the six to sit lower but I don't have two known ones for comparison. The reason I'm asking is that I have a least two pairs that I would like to sell. Thank you.
  9. My car was a MK3 so cable rather than accelerator lever. But I hope these two photos might be of some help with the plumbing. rgds John
  10. Thanks to your input I have a plan. Opinion seems to indicate that fuel boils in the pump. So I'm going to suggest to Jerry that we put a small motorcycle radiator fan in the side valance and blow cold air directly onto the pump. I can roll up a cylinder to duct the air where we want it. Hopefully this might solve the problem.
  11. Hazen, the answer to the tailgate problem sounds like the seal. The after market ones are too thick. Rarebits supply one which is pretty close to the original profile if you fit one of his  your tailgate will sit much nearer where it should
  12. Tim just a detail perhaps you can help me with. The cables from the switch attach with bullet connectors to the loom under the tunnel and i guess the cable comes up inside the gaiter in the carpet. So, to dismantle, how do you unscrew the knob without being able to disconnect the cable to allow it to turn with the knob. I'm sure this is a damn fool question so sorry if the answer is obvious.
  13. Nick you really are a genius. Jerry's car is a slow filler which does indicate a problem with the tank breather. Perhaps as you say this could be a factor.
  14. Thanks Bill; as I feared. The rubber is crying out for a bit of bright trim.
  15. It sounds like a good mod but i just wondered if the actuating lever on the pump is long enough to still be operated by the cam when the pump is stood off by half an inch or so.
  16. You're a Wombler Ted just like me.  A man after my own heart 🙂
  17. I'm really grateful to you Tim for that. I shall order one up. rgds John
  18. This does rather confirm Nick's theory that the problem is petrol boiling in the fuel pump. In Jerry's case the problem is nothing to do with coolant temperature; it has always been on Normal. So the question is, can the fuel pump be stood off from the block with an insulator fitted and still operate mechanically?
  19. Proper job Tim as they down here in Devon. I've just checked with B & G and here's the griff. There are three types of switch available the only difference being the screw thread. The one here in the picture is 7/16UNF part number STN1056. The chap in the stores was very helpful and said he could check the other threads if I wanted him to. Pricewise not much different from the MK2 GT6 column switch. Other part numbers are STN 1051& 1052. Add a suffix B and you have one in black.
  20. I've just checked with Jerry and he assures me that he always uses 97 and 98 Octane fuel. The odd thing Nick is that i never had the problem on my GT6 which essentially is the same as Jerry's but without the side valances. I was interested in your theory about the temperature of the fuel pump but the inlet pipe although i didn't check it cannot be that hot surely? Perhaps the next step is to take off the valences and see if it still happens.
  21. Having lagged and insulated the petrol pipe from the pump to the front carburettor on Jerry's car I believed we'd put the problem behind us. But not so. Lining up in the queue for the ferry the engine cut out. Once it had cooled and the bowls refilled all was well. I never had this trouble on my GT6 and the only difference is that Jerry has side valances fitted and I didn't. I can only think that the divers side valance is holding the heat in the engine bay. I'd be interested in what you think
  22. Dave forgive me if you already know this but the horn relay on your car has a single 12V feed with an internal link connecting the contacts and the coil. If Ted lets you have a modern 4 Pin relay you will need to split the feed into two. In the diagram the two parallel terminals are for the coil and the other two the contacts. So you will need one feed going to 87 and one to 86. 85 goes to the horn switch and 30 to the horn.
  23. Woolies offer a number of glass seals. Does anyone know if they have a suitable profile because their trims do fit the rubber.
  24. Thank you John. I agree a switch mounted on the wheel just where your thumb is would be ideal.
