  1. further developments. been out this morning and took the front carb float bowl apart, all seem ok but i cleaned it all up and noticed the flot edges were quite rough so smoothed them up and tried again, still running badly without choke but no overflowing. next i thought i would take out the fuel filter just in case, tried that and all seemed to work and no issues, ha ha i thought.......but no, i had started it up using choke and then took it off and was balancing carbs and couldnt get them right without a really high tickover, then noticed the choke had not shut off completely on the rear carb, as soon as i pushed it in and fixed the problem it ran crap again :( so i then checked fuel levels in bowls and needle length in case one had dropped and all was identical, then looked inside the carbs and saw this:   front carb you can clearly see the fuel level and rear carb you cant, so guessing there is something in the jet somewhere stopping fuel coming through.....

  3. junkuser wrote:It does sound like the float valve is catching intermittently. this is the only thing i can think of as well, although cant see anything it can catch on. fuel pump does have a filter and was removed and cleaned last weekend in an attempt to fix the problem last time :( thanks rich
  4. nope, its got the plastic ones that cant be altered, but the float height gap is more than the book says so if anything the fuel level should be lower than std..... the mind boggles!
  5. nope float is fine and empty. yes all tubes and jets blown through and no blockages at all, seems i am getting too much fuel as its overflowing into the carb body and somehow lowering the jet (pulling choke slightly) the level drops and stops flowing out, very weird, and as for why it comes and goes i dont know . the tube into the float bowl has not been taken out since was fitted a few years ago.
  6. i do, just before fuel pump, whole system was cleaned out last friday as thought it was that the first time.
  7. its the front carb causing the problem, its not overflowing out of the overflow just the main jet. fuel pump is original and never been a problem so presume its ok. bowl is in correct position as well, doing my nut in that it can be fine for 200 miles then play up for 20 and refuse to run properly :( thanks rich
  8. Cry for help, this car is annoying the hell out of me for past few weeks! few weeks ago it started playing up but only for a few seconds, basically ran like i had lost 2 cyls but cleared and was fine again for a few days, last week it did it and would only run if i left the choke on about 10mm out and could just get to 40mph slowly and no power. i did a comp test and all at 150, rebuilt carbs twice and all was ok, removed new plugs and fitted old ones and fitted old float needles and it started up and ran fine so though i had found the problem, all week fine then today i drove up a big hill no problem, coasted down other side then wouldnt accelerate again, pulled choke out about 3-5mm and it would run fine and accelerate without any problem, but only if i left the choke on. new plugs and float valves installed today and its still doing it, removed air box to check the the pistons move and found when i lift the font one fuel comes out the jet, so seems the fuel level is too high, but how on earth could it do this while driving along and sometimes work and sometimes not ?????????? any help appreciated as at the moment i would be happy if i woke up tomorrow to find some bugger had nicked it as really pi$$ing me off......... rich
  9. Hi Wim, I have the 18acr and no extra wiring at all, just unbolted one and bolted on new one, been fine since, cant remember where i got it from though. i have had a look and i do have that door handle bit but its a bit rusty and not very good i'm afraid :( rich
  10. if you mean the bit that sits behind the handle thats a sod to get off without damaging it then i do have them, will get a pic and send them over to see what you think and if any use you can have them.
  11. that sounds a bit more like it :D think my gauge is wired into same connection as the stereo so not a true reading either. hahahaahah my battery is std tiny one but works ok if i keep all brushes on starter and alternator nice and clean.   sounds like the alternator is working fine then if getting enough volts, are all earth points from headlights back to battery all clean and corrosion free and tight?
  12. on a different note, which bit of the door handle did you need as found a few more bits so may have what you want? if got a pic i can check to see if i have the right bit. rich
  13. i think the 16acr is std, when mine failed i upgraded to the 18acr although even on the 16 mine was always ok. 14volts sounds a bit high for normal running, mines is normally only that high when battery is a bit flat, once charged it is about 13 at most. is your battery ok and holding enough charge? terminals nice and clean and tight? rich
  14. It could be, i have an 18acr on mine and will happily tickover on main beam (with halogen lights), heater on full and wipers going. have you got a volt meter in the car or can you temporarily fit one and watch it as you turn the lights on and see what happens. first thing i would try is cleaning the alternator and all the contacts inside as could just be in need of a clean? rich
  15. well i was completely wrong, compression test was 150psi across all cyls so running far better that i thought it would, but still wouldnt rev, so i swapped the new spark plugs for the old set and it ran better but not right, noticed the one carb overflowing so change the float valve for an old one and now all running as it was and no problems. new plugs and valves will be ordered and hopefully no more problems..... rich
  16. weeeeellllllllllllll............ the carbs have been rebuilt and no muck in them anywhere and still the same problem, but now i notice i have lost about a cup full of coolant from overflow bottle in last week and white smoke out of the exhaust when i rev it, bugger!!!!!!!!!!!!  guessing the head gasket has gone so compression test 2moro and a rebuild, looks like i'll be on the motorbike to go to work all week :( on the plus side it could explain why its been running hotter than normal and temp gauge has been going up and down while driving and maybe the slightly lower mpg as well. why do these things never go wrong in the summer?????? not happy Rich
  17. Got a bit of a problem with my car, all has been running fine for a while, last weekend i cleaned the carbs out as they had started flooding and found crap in the bowls, so all cleaned and were fine all week until my way into work yesterday... after about 10miles i slowed down for a bend and then it wouldnt accelerate back up to speed again, just misfired and stuttered badly like i was out of fuel, which it isnt, by pulling the choke i could get it to run just about and could potter along at 30mph. i have checked the pump filter and inline filter and all ok, plugs checked and spark tested which running and all fine, i drove home at 30mph for 18miles in country lanes and plugs look light brown so guessing its a fuel problem, it ticks over ok but it wont rev without putting the choke on, am guessing some crap has got into main jets maybe as have checked everything else and all is fine, anyone any other ideas on what it could be??? thanks rich
  18. i bought one of these 4 years ago when points were only lasting 3months: http://www.simonbbc.com/electronic-ignition-kits/triumph-powerspark-electronic-ignition-kit-45d i have never had to touch it since, i bought one for my dads MGB GT as well and exactly the same, fit and forget, only thing i noticed, apart from no adjustment, was the easier starting, didnt notice any power gain or improved mpg though. rich

    Noisy Tappets ???

oooooooo thats not looking very healthy! hope mine is nothing that bad as need it for work everyday so cant be taking it off the road yet! not been doing many miles fore last few years so not sure how long it is between times when need adjusting but will make a note and see how it goes. I sure have, got it painted just over a year ago, not got the insides sorted yet though as still deciding what to do with it, thank again for that Mike :) rich

    Noisy Tappets ???

aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that makes sense :D have tried to do that in the past (didnt know it was called VL ;D)  i have a digital dial gauge but no way to mount it over the valves, may have to try again and see if i can do, would make setting the clearances, or at checking them a lot more accurate ! thanks rich

    Noisy Tappets ???

i did think about that, seem to remember a few of them, maybe these 3 have always been odd, they are set the same as the others but the noise they make is different when move manually and they seem to visibly move more, so paid more attention and pushed down hard on the adjuster to measure and thats when found they were more like 12 thou not 9. i'll make a nope of them and see if they get worse or not, think it was 2 inlets and one exhaust one. have to ask what is VL?  been around engines all my life but never heard the acronym VL :) thanks again rich

    Noisy Tappets ???

hhhhmmmmmmmmmm well i found the problem, user error again! ;D I thought before i get oil everywhere i will go over the clearances again and just make sure they are all at 9thou, 3 of them werent so have set them and checked all of them again and much better now, lesson for next time is do the job properly to start with hehehehe thanks all rich

    Noisy Tappets ???

Thanks all, As far as i know the engine is completely std with original parts still, rocker faces have been filed down, taking car not to upset profile or the bit which touches the valve. most tappets do seem ok but some always seem reluctant to be set right, i'll have a play 2moro and try to see ifleaving a feeler gauge in them makes a difference, then just a case of setting them right hopefully. will report back what happens if anything.   A bit of oil wont matter much as the car is a work horse so engine is oily and gunky but it works and stops any rust ;D thanks rich

    Noisy Tappets ???

Thanks Marcus i'll give it a go, is it ok to run the engine without the rocker box on then or is oil going to go everywhere? never tried that before. i set them at nine to try and take up some of the wear, think i read somewhere to set them at say 5thou, then work out how many turns out to get it to 15thou then do them up to nothing and back off that amount of turns, not sure i could measure it accurately enough though. will hopefully get enough time to try this over the weekend. ta rich
  25. I have had a rattling noise coming from the top of my engine ever since i have had it and after 20k miles its getting annoying. I have tried and checked everything and nothing makes any difference, the tappets are set at 9thou as there is a slight recess in the rocker face but not much at all. the noise doesnt change with engine load only speed and is def coming from the middle of the rocker box, cant see what else it could be, any ideas? or anyone near J10 of the M42 with a click adjust i can borrow to double check the gaps? thanks rich
