  1. I have been lucky enough to pick up a few boxes of spitfire spares today, mostly mkIV but some stuff fits my 1500 so i have had those bits (see freebies forum for list of stuff i have going free to good home). it came with 2 carpet sets, one complete and new, one slightly used and not complete, although the other bits may be in second batch when i get them. question is do the carpets in a mkIV fit in a 1500? they look like they should but listed as different part codes, anyone know for sure? thanks rich
  2. I have had similar problems on my 1500 spitfire, in my case it was the fuel pump filter and inline filter blocking up and restricting the fuel. rich

    EP90 oil

the gearbox has always been a bit stiff on the car so every gear change is done slowly as seems to make it easier, o/d is just flicked on and off regardless though and never missed a beat, instant on and instant off.   The car is rarely driven as quick as modern traffic which prob helps it last, never saw the point trying to make my 33 year old car go quick when i have a motorbike sat in the shed thats far quicker :)

    Running in oil?

a few years ago back in my days of being in a motorbike owners club there were discussions on this fairly often and there seemed to be 2 schools of thought, the normal one of take it easy and no racing etc and then the other way of ride/drive it a bit harder then normal initially, the theory being that in order for all the metal to bed in you should push it hard while the edges are sharp and able to cut into each other....... have only ever had to run one engine in and i did take my time, but since then have thrashed the arse off it and its always been fine. you pays your money and makes your choice

    EP90 oil

next time i get some i will try to make sure it is the right stuff, knowing my luck next trip out and the diff and gearbox will fail heheheheheheh

    EP90 oil

have seen this question come up a few times, when i first put my spitfire on the road i didnt check if it was GL4 or GL5, turns out it was GL5 and do have an overdrive, done just over 20k and still using same brand of oil and no issues with anything slipping or going wrong, guessing i could just be lucky though? rich
  7. There is a post on here by WIMPUS called My Spit 1500, fairly long but shows how his car went along and a great read, puts mine to shame as look great :) Rich

  9. I had this on my car, lights on but no rears or clock lights, sometimes they just came back on after a few flicks of the switch, much frustration finally fixed and the culprit was teh fuse box! the fuses were fine and connectors all looked ok but if i wiggled the wires behind the lights went on and off, i took all fuses out and carefully filed the end with a small file so nice and shiny, then took out each connector in fuse box and filed them shiny as well, put all back together and no problems ever since. before i did the filing the connectors all look ok but a bit dull, guessing it was too dull. nice cheap and easy fix if its the same problem on yours. rich

    Tappity tappets

mine rattle a bit as well, i took the rockers off and carefully filed down the edges as they were worn, this helped quieten mine down a bit as did setting then to a tight 9thou, still noisy and some  move more than others so i just ignore it, cant here it with the roof down anyway  ;D rich

    Carbs

if they are std then they are hs4's, adjusting mixture is easy as said above - just a screw on the bottom of the carb body to wind the jet in a bit. i had mine fail last year on emissions and one side running too rich, turned out to be the choke was not shutting off properly! if you can get a pic up then should be able to help more as andrew says. generally quite simple to adjust though. rich
  12. Not had any failure that bad, but i have had all rear lights and dash lights go out on me, mine turned out to be a dodgy fuse box, i took my fuses out and all connectors and cleaned them all up, rebuilt and no problems ever since, maybe worth a try? rich
  13. i have a similar problem with mine but the key does not stick in, i found if i spray wd40 over the lock mechanism it starts to work again then a few weeks later back to normal. have found if i turn teh key as far as it goes the lock always works but if i unlock then take key out the handle wont always open the door. not sure how they adjust or if its possible so i just keep oiling mine.

  15. i had a grose jet in my old mini when the normal one wore out and kept leaking, never had a problem, my spit has new normal jets and all fine, my dad fitted grose jets to his mgb and had loads of problem so went back to normal jets. i take it you dont have the overflow pipes taking the fuel away from the float bowl top and dumping it on the floor, not great but stops it getting on the exhaust. rich
  16. i used axle stand method, warmed up engine then with engine revving and wheels spinning i pushed clutch pedal fully then stamped on the brakes until almost stall then do again and again etc, it let go pretty soon and was ok although was never great but driveable enough. rich
  17. i think i have mine wired in to the one that feeds the stereo and seems to work ok.
  18. i had the same problem when mine went after rebuilding it, i mentioned it had just been rebuilt, new calipers and pads/shoes all round which te tester could see so although they werent great he did pass them, a few miles of driving and they were fine.
  19. i would put a multimeter at the starter connector to see if power is getting to the motor from the solenoid, if it is then could be the starter is stuck, if you remove the plugs can you turn the engine over by hand?, doubt the engine is stuck but easy thing to rule out. rich
  20. I have air horns on mine as well, much better than the original which was the horn equivalent of a mouse saying "excuse me", where air horns are more like the hulk shouting "get the F**K out of my way!" ;D they are easy to fit and they normally come with all the bits needed, the existing wiring fits to the relay to act as the switch and the other two go to the live for the air horn and a live from the battery., the other air horn terminal is just the earth so can fit to the compressor mounting point. rich
  21. had probs with mine having a slow cranking speed until i realised the brushes were far too worn to be any use, quick swap with new brushes and turns over far quicker, cheaper to do than a new one or bigger battery :)
  22. piman wrote:Hello Paynester, I forgot to mention the most obvious check, are the jets fully up, i.e. the choke cable is slack when you push the knob back in allowing the jets to return? Alec very good point, had no end of issues trying to figure out my fuel consumption and black plug problem until i realised the jets werent going back in all the way with choke lever pushed in, but if tapped them they flicked in to position, a bit of light polishing and been fine since. rich
  23. Is the car on teh road or being driven at all, if not then i find they stay black as running mostly on choke, easiest way is use a colourtune to see what is going on in the combustion chamber, i know there is the little pushrod on the carbs to check but never been able to get mine to react how they say it should, even though the plugs are the right colour. rich
  24. that looks really good, need to sort mine out at some point but its on a long list of jobs :) am guessing if you have had it all painted then last thing you want is scratches from fitting it, not sure what you could use though rich
  25. As mine decided to fall out while driving down the motorway last week i can say there is nothing between them at all  ;D  i now have to clean mine up and re-rivet it back in place, easy enough job though. rich
