  1. i had a similar problem about 2 years ago, but it was with rear lights and dash lights, had to flick switch on and off a while until they came on but once on were fine, then one day i took the fuse box apart, cleaned all terminals and no problems since.....until now :D   but now i think about it abut a year before the lights problem i had one where no ignition spark after had been near the glove box, which turned out to be fuse box as well..... so guess what ill be doing in the morning heheheheheheh
  2. Well new coil been on for a week and though all was going well and problem sorted...... nope, once yesterday and twice today it has gone again, seems to go for about 2-3 seconds then comes back, but tonight i noticed that the indicators also go off, lights and radio stay on and not sure about heater, tacho goes as well but too quick for fuel/temp gauge to alter, so now looks like its a fuse problem so will be checking it out 2moro and hoping i can find the cause..... rich
  3. Doug thats exactly how my system runs, the module takes power from a feed in the dashboard as presumed my coil was 6v, as it turns out though it looks like my ballast wire dont work and is feeding the coil 12v and the coil itself is also a 12v coil. the joy of old cars with past owners messing with them :)
  4. Hi, ok ta, that explains the voltage at both posts, i have an electronic module instead of points but shouldnt make a difference. have tried that and came back at 3.1ohms across the +ve / -ve and 4.6k ohms from post to central point, so seems it is a 12v coil with a 12 volt feed but wiring all seems std so no idea how its get 12volts.....   the terminals are alittle corroded but nothing major, will try a spare 12v coil i have and see if problem comes back. thanks rich
  5. .... and as the current coil has no markings at all on it, is there any way to tell what voltage it is?
  6. over last 3 days have had 3 weird issues, first one was while slowing down to pull into a car park the ignition briefly cut out but came straight back, then today while sat in traffic it cut out, turned key and restarted, then 30 seconds later about to pull out and dies again, everything else still working, but tacho reading zero and engine not running, this time it would not restart, but after about 2mins of cranking on and off it fires and been fine all way to work and abck (17miles each way). so am guessing the only thing to kill the tacho that quick and kill engine is the coil, it does look  very old and probably the original!  so i thought i would just get a new ballast coil, but thought would check the old one, seems i am getting 12 volts on both terminals???? i thought it was a 6v ballast system? so first question is does this sound wrong, secondly surely i shouldnt get 12v on the negative side with ignition on but engine not running, and thirdly if i drop in a 12v coil should it work? thanks rich
  7. yep, the little metal bent wire bits that push the jet down when activate teh choke, why they werent designed to use the original ones which fit really easily i'll never know, and trying to fit the little return spring can be fun!!!!! i'd stay as you are then and just try polishing them a bit to see if return any better, as well as fitting springs if not got them :)
  8. Wim, i'd be careful about which jet kits you get, cant remember where got mine from but it did say "SU spares" on the box. i have huge problems getting the sodding control arm to fit, it kept jamming everywhere and was a right sod to fit, in the end i had to grind the blt head for the float chamber by about 1mm each side so the connecting rod would fit without being bent, if wasnt for my original ones pipes leaking i'd have sent them back as pain in the arse and removing them now and trying to reset the spring every time takes a while.  i know a lot of people rave about them so no idea why mine didnt fit very well but def would do it again. rich

    Squeaky fan belt

Anyone know what i can do to stop the squeak on my fan belt, i know its the belt as old one was fine, new one squeaks, back to old one and ok, back to new one and it squeaks. not a constant squeak, its only when a certain bit goes over a pulley, seems a bit of white cord material is sticking out and it squeaks, have trimmed it but still squeaks, not very loud but enough to notice, pulleys all seem clean and smooth not sure what else to try apart from buying another belt? rich should just add its not slipping or anything, just a squeak as the rubber goes over the metal pulley
  10. after running out once while gauge reading above zero, i drained the tank from the fuel pump pickup until it was empty, then turned on ignition to let gauge warm up for about 10mins (coil and ignition module disconnected) then set gauge at empty so i know when it is about to run out. i only normally get about 25litres at most in mine, soemtiems 26 but not very often, guessing the rest is below the pickup i guess. rich

    Noisy rocker

sorry to hijack smeones thread, having had my rocker off with engine running i can see one of my pushrods is not spinning much and another is not moving at all so guessing the 2 followers have stuck and worn which is causing the problem. should be picking up new bits 2moro but wondered if the head def has to come off to change the cam followers?  think it does but for once engien running very well and dont want to pull it apart unless have to. thanks rich

    Noisy rocker

Never knew they should rotate, mine has a rattle i cant trace but believe it is the cam followers, i was just going to pull the whole thing apart and check but can now do it without taking it apart, guess if they dont rotate then are worn too much. thanks for that Marcus, can now hopefully trace my rattle. rich

    front bumpers

thats sounds about the same as this one, about 1 to 2 inches wider and the bend is more severe although not my much. i dont need it, am trying to get rid of them but need to know what it is before can offer it to a new home. thanks rich

    front bumpers

Recently i was given 2 front bumpers which i thought were the same and for a mkIV / 1500 spitfire, i have been moving them and noticed they are not the same, the one is identical to the one i have on the front of mine so i know thats correct, but the other is slight wider and the bend seems to sharp compared to the normal, any one know what it could be off? the mounting seem in the same place. thanks rich
  15. have been thinking about repairing the ones i have but think they are too far gone, thinking now about getting either black or dark brown vinyl as far cheaper as as it does get used as a workhorse the vinyl might last better, does anyone have any pics of a beige / light tan interior with either black or dark brown seats so can see which look better? thanks rich
  16. I am looking to try and replace teh seat covers in my 1500, they are dirty and torn so need replacing, the foams are good as were replaced 2 years ago but since then the covers have developed a few rips so time to change them. it currently has a beige interior  with houndstooth seats, but as these are over £200 i wont be putting the same ones back in, far too expensive for me, i havd found on ebay someone selling vinyl ones for £70 but they only do black or dark brown, no use to me as would have to be the beige colour, anyone know anywhere that sells these for a reasonable price? the car is def not a show winner as my only car so not looking for perfect match, just covers with no tears and a close enough colour. thanks rich
  17. Did mine recently and found 145 - 150 on cold engine, yours seem a little low but all close together so maybe nothing to worry about. rich
  18. thats how i thought they would be, but nope.  currently at 33 flats out from fully in but not sure if this is higher than bridge or not, tested with colour tune today and blue spark/flame when ticking over and if open the throttle it goes orange briefly then back to blue again, cant try lifting pins as both are seized up. all i can think is the jet bearing being low is allowing air to be drawn through the gap instead of over the jet sucking in fuel..... only a guess though as have ruled out it getting extra air anywhere else, everything else is clean and std
  19. Just to add, i am in tamworth but travel near burton, Rugeley and Leicester regularly so if anyone going near places i can meet up maybe. no hurry to get it moved so happy to hold onto it for a while if need be. thanks rich
  20. As far as i know yours looks like most i have seen with mine being an odd version, am guessing there must be a version of the HS4 which needs the smaller version, its not the ones i have though ;D  wonder if i have the wrong tags as well? or their website is wrong. will have to double check sizes before ordering i think and not go off the part codes.... thanks rich
  21. thanks for thatm the figures for mine are far less, mine is 4.0 instead of 6.2 and 19.5 instead of 26.1  so looks like quite a bit out.... time to get spending a few more pennies on this car i think in quest to get it all running as it should be. thanks again, most appreciated. rich
  22. Finally got round to fitting my new exhaust, well most of it, decided to go for normal looking stainless one to keep normal look, just got to get down pipes off now so can fit the final bit fitted.  seems i caught it just in time as link pipe was cracked about 3/5 of way through, down pipes look in a bad way so hope they last a few weeks until i can get then changed. the backbox is still in usable condition as far newer, if anyone wants it they are welcome to it, otherwise its out for the scrap man :)
  23. bit of a day sorting problems on my car, checked the mixture using a colortune and its the same linking the 2 carb breather pipes to each other or if i leave it std and sucks from the rocker box, only thing left now is the jet bearings themselves i think so thats next on the list.... rich
  24. Mine judders a bit but everything else checked so i know its my clutch and just live with it as no other issue, but could be as yorkshire_spam says. if its not disengaging properly then could be air in the system or old fluid, they are easy enough to bleed so that would be my first port of call, as for the vibration, is it the engine running rough or could it be engine/gearbox mountings? rich
  25. the std ones seemed a bit low to me so i run 28 all round and get fairly even tyre wear and good grip as well, rightly or wrongly it suits me car .
