  1. It's really only in the last 10 years or so that car manufacturers have been able to make a watertight convertible, when l worked for Aston Martin on the DB9 convertible we did a lot of work to make it waterproof with seal profiles and door glass that raise into the seal when you close the door and drop down when you open the door. A Herald/Vitesse was built with a token effort at reducing the ingress of water, and really with all the worn joints and hard seals it's going to be almost impossible to get the glass to make 100% contact with the glass. I'm going to replace everything to try and get to a factory fresh condition new door seals, glass runners, and hood seals and then try and improve it from there :-/ One thing check the tub spread, measure the distance between the top of the B pillars as the tub can open out with age and this will effect the fit off the glass against the seal, can't remember the dimension but one one on here will know ;)
  2. run a jump start lead from the battery earth to the engine and see if spark improves as you connect and disconnect ;)
  3. Allways good to have a delivery of nice shiney bits 8) My problem is remembering where l've stashed them away :-/
  4. Speedy, did that spay can fall  ;D Like your need for lightness with drilled alloy bracket ;) got titanium bolts yet! were all the rage when l used to do cycle racing 8) many noon's ago when l was young fit and thin!

    Chrome

Even rechroming isn't cheap and don't go for cheap places only go for places that come by recommendation ;) Oh and they won't be done quick, usually a few weeks, that's a sign that a place is good if they have a waiting list ;) my dad got some wheel trims rechomed for is zodiac cost him 200 for 4 trims!

    Seats

Have seen XJS seats fitted so you can have electic heated seats for those winter mornings and they tilt unlike the popular MX5 seats fitted.
  8. If you want to upgade you can fit the Caterham alloy front hubs with uprated fully sealed bearing for the front, they are about 300 for complete set also think Canley's do them with choice of different stud paterns! The herald bearings weren't really designed for the wider or heavier alloy wheels and people have had problems in the past with them breaking up.
  9. Try some easy start spray if you've got a spark at the plugs spraying that into the carb while you are cranking it over that will get it running all the time you are spraying the stuff in ;)

    Rear seat belts

I'm currently fitting 3 point seat belt front and rear to my Herald convertible and like Clive said l added braces along the sides and brackets for the retractors, i'm usinf escort mk5 front seat belts for front and rear, this is the front belt top mounting, i've added stell to close the C section rail and triangle of steel underneath. This is a pictue of the rear retractor bracket and upper fixing point the upper will not have a pillar loop the belt will just exit the top of the seat through a chrome bezel and the seat belt run from the retractor to the poit where it exits the seat will be protected from the folded hood buy a plastic shield. This is the rear centre fixing. In this picture you can see the lower front seat belt retractor mounting bracket and the final belt fixing point just forward of the bottom of the B pillar. The bracket's l used were avaliable in DIY shops in germany, and made like a lot simiper, but l haven't seen them in B&Q but you may be able to get them in a proper ironmongers they are fench post brackets. Ofcourse my problem is l can only make it a stong as l can, l can't do a R14 test or crash it into a wall at 40miles an hour to see if they work :-/
  11. Hi Cyril! you have two alternatives one is a replacement bulkhead is it a saloon or convertible? if it's a saloon you may get hold of good 2nd hand one good convertible ones are like hen's teeth, but beware there are a lot of bodged up ones out there take mine for example a 'restored' one from ebay turned out like this! Your other alternative is to repair what you've got, look at the exploded views on canley's web site or rimmer;-) Yes some one used a mig welder to do that! So l bought two new floors total cost was about 120 including delivery from canley's, l ended up with this after l hade removed the rot! I made the chassis mounting but they are avaliable also 15-20 pounds each. And this was the repaired floor, as mentioned before the complete floor panel does not include the metal that goes under the A pillar, l had to make that using the best side as a pattern. So far my herald has gobbled up 2 3'x6' sheeta of 18 swg steel!!!, two door skin's, two tread plates, two front floor panels, two B pillar lower panels, bonnet front panel, two front wings, 2 D panels, two front inner panels, but only the front floors were new the rest were from abandoned restorations;-) so l saved a fortune, so keep you eye's peeled bargains do turn up, good luck with you project!!
  12. Cyril the Herald is rather sick, the picture you have put up shows the chassis side rail and a hole, which is surposed to be a mounting point between the bottom of the A post and the chassis side rail, but with your's this is completely missing lol and also the bottom of the A pillar has no metal either! This you will be glad to here is not uncommon which for a car that is quite often bought by people who think they are easy to work on and then are completely overwhelmed by the amount of work to put all the rust back to solid metal is the reason why there are so many unfinished Heralds still about :-/
  13. I'd go for a fuse box with 12-14 fuses so you have spares to add other items, electrnic ignition, kenlowe fan ect.
  14. Have a look on rimmer website and see if they are the same part number ;)
