Doing some work on a Mk.2 Spitfire just now, which has a Herald 1300 engine fitted.

We suspect there is a crack in the cyclinder head, and wondered if this is a common / known issue with the 1300 ?

Pretty rare.  Sometimes between inlet and exhaust valves.  Where is you suspected crack?

Not sure yet.....

Recent symptoms were an inlet valve on no.3 cyl. froze in place (it was recently replaced, along with guide), and when we took it out, it looked to have some kind of coating on, which we believe to be "cooked" water / anti-freeze.....

I think the engine had been run hot, but I was just trying to find out if there was a known weakness in heads cracking.
