I really don’t think petrol is going to be an issue this weekend. The situation was caused by the media making a story out of nothing that led to panic buying. Unlike toilet rolls, people can’t hoard petrol. Once their cars are full they can’t keep buying fuel. There are already signs that it’s starting to go back to normal this evening. The fuel stations on the major roads and rural areas where we are heading have petrol. My wife drove to Exeter and back to Essex at the weekend and didn’t have problems getting fuel. As others have said it’s part of the challenge of getting your car round. Looking forward to it! Roll on Friday 🙂

After reading this thread I decided to upgrade my Osram night breaker on my Spit 1500 to Nighteye LED and it’s a major improvement on dipped where I felt the nightbreakers were not strong. On full beam it really lights up the road. The only thing is that I had to leave off the rubber (the piece I’m holding on the photo) at the back of the Headlight lens for it to fit in the headlight cowl. You can see before and after. Does anyone think that will cause a problem? The light is protected from the road by a plastic cowl fitted to the bonnet.

I do feel this is political and media’s fault. BP was only closing a handful of their stations, but media blew it up out of all proportions. Quite a few petrol stations are now closed near me due to panic buying. I managed to fill the Spitty up without having to queue for too long this morning. I did notice that one station, that was closed yesterday, is now open with all pumps working so fuel deliveries are getting through. Hopefully it would have calmed down by next weekend. 🤞

I read that BP had closed some stations too. I think we should be fine, but might take a spare fuel can for the first time on the RBRR 😉

Very happy, Spitfire passed MOT this morning with only an advisory on the rear tyre. The tread has started to get low on both rears but plenty left to be legal. However, the offside rear had a small bulge in the tyre wall on the inside. It was very difficult to spot and one could only see it whilst under the car in the pit. So new rear tyres have been ordered. I think this goes to show that our older cars which are exempt from MOT should still get tested regularly. I wouldn’t of spotted that and I hate to think what would had happened if the tyre failed whilst at speed with my son in the car.

There was a RBRR just before the engine rebuild where I was topping up with oil with every fuel stop. I think I got through 10 litres of oil on that RBRR! Thankfully a litre is now enough.

Fixed speedo tonight. As suspected it was just the cable had popped out of the back. Also changed the spark plugs for new ones to ensure misfire is resolved. Took it for a spin this evening and misfire seems to have gone. MOT tomorrow morning so fingers crossed she’ll pass. If MOT doesn’t raise any issues, it should be just tune and stick carpets down and fix new bonnet cones.

That’s a shame, but at least it failed now rather than 2am Saturday morning in the middle of nowhere up in Scotland. 😉 Hopefully you can fix it before the event starts.

Checked the manifold and it is fine. I checked the plugs and they were a little sooted so I think she’s running a little too rich. I cleaned the plugs and topped up the dash pots with oil as they were low and misfire has gone away. I will get the carbs tuned and hopefully that resolves it permanently. Although I will be driving her a lot now to make sure it does, as it make me nervous when things like this happens just before the event starts.

My understanding was that the rally app needs to on for the whole event but can be on in the background except when approaching the control stops when it needs to be active on screen. But you may be able to turn it off between controls as Ferny suggested. I’m not sure on that, so maybe just keep it on in the background until you get near control stops. Unless someone can clarify?

New job to do. After driving faultlessly to the DM yesterday on the way back it developed as misfire. Fine on the motorway but struggled on b-roads and when I came off at services. Seemed to drive slightly better when I pulled the choke out so wondering whether it’s fuel supply related?

I’m insured with Classicline and added my 18 year old son at the time for £25. (He’s just turned 19 now). The only condition is that you have to be in the vehicle whilst they are driving which is fine for events like C2C and RBRR and you both have to be members of TSSC. Perhaps Club Triumph should organise something similar to encourage younger members and the next generation to look after our cars. Trying to get him insured on his own or as a named driver is impossible/ridiculously expensive.

Hi Just a suggestion that I’ve found useful in the past. I’ve ordered and just received some motorway grade magnetic flexible sheet vinyl 0.85 mm from a well known auction site. I plan to put the RBRR stickers onto this and cut to size then apply them to car. I’ve done this for the last few RBRRs and they’ve never fallen off or damaged paint work, unlike my first RBRR where I had problems getting the residue the sticker left behind off my car. The panel does have to be fairly flat and filler free. Works well on my Spitfire. Another benefit of this is that one gets a souvenir of the event. 🙂 Cheers Paul

Interesting Tim, Does the Ferodo DS pads cause a lot of brake dust on the wheels? I’ve got EBC green pads on my Spit with EBC upgraded disks and haven’t experienced the problems you’ve mentioned but I may consider these when replacing them in the future. One of the reasons I switched to EBC apart from performance improvement was my previous pads used to create loads of brake dust.

Thanks for the replies gents. I did think that one didn’t have to continue with MOTs but wanted to make sure. If my car did fail a MOT on a safety point then I would definitely want to fix it so the above makes sense. Thanks
