    Alternative seats

When I used my 2500 mk2 for the 160 miles per day home work travel I did back then, and found that the foam in the original seats were past their best, I installed seats of an Interceptor Mk1 I had spare. Very comfortable and recommended. When I sold the car three years later I forgot to remove the seats. Still annoyed I lost those seats.
  2. It might be that the water / ethylene glycol mix is lees than optimal (too much ethylene glycol). Did not think of that! Will be first on my list to check. Thanks for reminding.
  3. TR4 this time which is in good health overall. Although it has a tendency to get too hot. Radiator is only 4 years old as is the water pump. I installed a manually controlled electric fan in front of the radiator which does help a lot. Maybe wiring in an automatic controller for the fan would be a good idea.   Probably a good idea to have a thorough look at the brakes, I cannot remember ever doing anything to them. Apart from new hoses in 1995 and the master cylinder which gained new cups and a hone a couple of years later. Three Triumph backup cars, although all need a fair amount of work for this kind of trip.
  4. In the case of JoG I would not mind much... My comment, from someone who had its first RBRR last month. The event is a very good one, our team enjoyed it immensely. As could be expected it was sometimes a bit crowded at fuel stations / stops, but nothing too drastic. We thought the breakfast at Lands End was very good. Not so much for the one at John O Groats though! The place is too small / cramped, dirty tables and a bad smell. After a few minutes looking for spaces we decided it was not worth the wait and left. But if the majority feels the JoG breakfast is a must at the Seaview hotel then please leave as is. Up to the next RBRR.
  5. Hope to finish the Mk1 next time, that was planned for this year but we took my brothers yellow 2000 Mk2 instead. Pretty rare over here (Netherlands) but common as muck on the RBRR, there were a couple of identical cars around (meaning yellow Mk2s), ha ha. The Mk1 "just" needs to have the new rear wings (inner and outer) welded in. And probably some other checks as the car is in the shed since 2002 🙂 On the other hand, it might be fun using the TR4. Maybe entering two cars, the Mk1 and the TR and have a roulating scheme so TR drivers can have some rest as well. My brother would need to join CT but I do not see that as a problem.
  6. All went well. Speedo and fuel gauge repaired. We're on the ferry now. What could go wrong?
  7. Success - we found out most of the engine adjustments were far off. Valve adjustments: nearly all valves were way out of range. Static timing was TDC instead of 8 degrees BTDC. Now the car runs much better. Looked with two coloutune spark plugs and the rear carburettor (Stromberg CDS) runs a little rich. My Stromberg Allen tool does not work for this carb. So have to leave the adjustment as is. On the road we got a GPS measured top speed of 135 km/h (84 mph). That is a figure I can live with, now have much more confidence in the trip. The heater valve seems stuck. Turning it does not have an effect, both inlet and outlet pipes remain too cold meaning no water is flowing through them.
  8. Team 142 - the Flutterts One hour ago the yellow 2000 Mk2 passed its inspection (bi-yearly here). Hurray! Last inspection was before 2006. Another handbrake cable was needed, the old one could not be adjusted anymore because the adjustment nut had rusted solid onto the thread and then the threaded section snapped. One headlamp needed slight adjustment and a rear wheel cylinder needed fresh rubber. Not bad for 10+ years in a shed. Of course more work was done: new water hoses, contact points, distri cap and rotor, plugs and spark plugs cables. Fixed the headlamps, opened up and repaired the windscreen washer pump, new washer hoses. Checked wheel bearings and brakes. Still to do: * analyse why there is a hesitation when picking up speed and at higher revs (fuel pump not delivering enough?) * fix the heater (does not work at the moment). The cable cold/hot seems disengaged. And if there is still time: * fix the fuel gauge * fix the non-functioning overdrive (it is not the gearstick switch, this has been taken apart and now works) * fix the speedo Tomorrow we will work on the car, then leave home @ 6.30 pm to go to the overnight ferry Hoek van Holland - Harwich.
  9. Front windscreen chrome trim seats without rips Anyone has the two chrome front windscreen trims for sale? Maybe possibly take it to RBRR
  10. I hope someone with sharper eyes than myself can see if this car has an overdrive fitted or not (73 TR6).
  11. Retrieve the Mk1 from its 12 year old hiding place. And do the following: find two drive shafts somewhere. I nicked these from the car when the ones on my 2500 Mk2 were rubbish. Maybe I have the 2500 shafts somewhere but I would like to have decent shafts weld in the new rear half wings from Lloyd as soon as I receive these (December?) weld the boot floor at tits fron end maybe some more welding at the rear floor - not sure hwat it was like check to see if the exhaust has not fallen off check if the engine still runs! check if the clutch works check if the OD works get new tyres. Car has 15" Revolutions which make the tyre choice a little easier fit an electric power steering column. It has wider tyres, a smaller steering wheel and the rack has a more direct gearing. Not sure how that is possible but it definitively is comparing it with the other Mk1 we have in the shed, The previous fanatic owner somehow got that fitted, Hmmmm
  12. Good (?) Old Times... Having decided to enter, this was finally a good reason and opportunity to become a member of Club Triumph. I have been a forum member since 2005, became a club member yesterday and wanted to register to RBRR online. However I am presented a list there that should be printed and sent onwards including a cheque. A cheque? Is this 2015? I have not seen or used a cheque for twenty years or so. Is there another way to pay? Paypal? Bank transfer? Credit card? It would be nice to be able to fill in the details online instead of writing it on a piece of paper and send it in an envelope. Last time I used a letter and an envelope was over a year ago I think. Apart from the slight problem getting the registration to RBRR done, I am faced with the luxury problem as to what car to take. The 2000 Mk1? The Stag? The TR4? Well it is not really a luxury as the Mk1 needs welding and a general resurrection from its 10 year long sleep, the Stag needs a bit of welding, an interior and an inspection for a new registration in the Netherlands, the TR4 is ready but probably would need a general look over before the event. But hey the RBRR is months and montha away so there will be enough time. Anyway my brother who will be part of the team has a orange-yellow 2000 Mk2 we also could use - that only would need resurrection from a 3 years standstill.
  13. Just looked at a spare 420 rear bumper. Which is different - sides are longer, the overrider does not have a step and more decisively the mounting bracket is on the other side of the overrider.
  14. That looks like a rear bumper for a Jaguar S-type or 420. Or Daimler Sovereign (pre XJ type). Dion (420 owner)
  15. Ebay ad in Canada: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Triumph-Other-GT6-MK1-/161717490915
  16. Did some more digging. Graham Robson's book show the USA Mk1 with naked spooks, the Mk2 (GT6+) got the spokes covered. Again the Mk1 without covers in Michael Cook's USA book The Triumph Spitfire.
  17. This is it: Looks very similar to the TR5 wheel
  18. Quick question for the know it all. Did the USA spec Mk 1 has a padded spoked steering wheel? Unlike the GB / euro spec which has the lovely spoked wheel. Similar (same?) as the Vitesse and TR4. Just wondered because I am looking at a seemingly original GT6.

    original hood

Today I visited my father, a round trip of around 250 miles. Excellent weather except for the last 15 miles when the heaven opened. So I did put on the top, which was not very easy. The last time I used the hood was maybe 8 years ago. But it still fits perfectly. The nice thing is that it still is the same top when I bought the car in 1995. I am not 100% sure but it would not surprise me if it still is the original item. As is the tonneau cover. Heavy type of vinyl unlike modern types. Are there more who still have their original tops and covers? My car still has its original interior trim except the seat bottoms which have been replaced in the mid 70s.
  20. Rear arches of my Mk1 are toast so I would need both rear half wings and inner rear arch bowls (outer where they attach to the wings). Please....
  21. My brother owns a Mk1 and a Mk2 Plus my Mk1 saloon which needs rear arches
  22. Found some exploded views on the Rimmer site which makes it clear that the Mk1/2 had a different bonnet hinge (welded to the chassis). What makes it fuzzy for me is that, as everyone already said but I did not believe, the yellow car clearly has a Mk1/2 bonnet - and Mk1/2 bonnet hinges. Everything else on the car seem Mk3. Oh well maybe it had a crash in the past and was repaired using an older bonnet.
  23. Ah - found this snippet of information somewhere: Problem is the MK2 does not tilt the bumper like a MK3. The Mk3 bumper is bolted to the bonnet and the over riders tilt with it making the fit much simpler.
  24. I am not convinced yet... The yellow is a very early Mk3 with that low chassis number FD 6733. From the web (http://www.triumphspitfire.com/historymk3.html), changes after comm nbr FD 7301 (so later than the yellow one): running lights under front bumper changed to all-in-one unit from a lamp on a aluminium plinth
