  1. That maybe correct Alec, but they were brand new parts off the production line. It would be interesting to know just what part failures occured with the big saloons on the WCR and other rallies. The trouble now is that even very good secondhand parts are old with a history of lots of use. New parts as we all know can be of questionable quality too, that's why my gearbox is off again along with the new Borg and Beck clutch I fitted last weekend, which seems to have a weak diaphragm spring and slips quite readily above 3k revs accelerating Colin.

  3. As some people will know, I measure the time to something good happening in sleeps. The kids always did this (they're 15, 17 and 20years old now) and it has stuck. After arranginging the sunday night at the enfield premier inn for my team and my sisters team, my youngest sister txt back saying 'lovely, getting excited now!!' Neither of my sisters have done it before, but I can't imagine that after completing it, they won't want to do it again. Only 22 sleeps to go Colin

  5. I had a text from one of my sisters earlier this evening. Team 80 is actually my two sisters in a 1500HL Dolomite. Both RBRR first timers. Elaine said she had a phonecall from someone called David asking how her prep was going and if she had any questions as she was a first time entrant. She explained that she was my sister and said to me via text 'it was a really nice thing to do and I'm sure that if I didn't know so much about it as I do, it would be very reassuring to speak to someone who knows' So well done Dave Langrick, you have made my sister feel very welcome.   8. Early visit to mr. Shackford this morning for some Timken wheel bearings. Fitted them this afternoon with an already purchased shacktune spacer kit, so that's one less thing to do. Colin.

Started on wheel bearings and found that someone in the past had decided that the solution to worn front hubs (that the outer bearing spins in at the rear of the hub), is to peen the hub to seat them. They were still able to spin in the hub! So plan B involves reusing a spare set of hubs that I have in stock. I've also got to have the screws taken out of my right ankle that were put in last year. (See the picture). They have done the job of fusing that part of the joint but are now causing me pain. That's set for Monday 15th September. So one of my co drivers Al will be getting familiar with driving the Pi for Gaydon. I will be the one on crutches. But I will have 2wks and 4 days to heal before the start of the run!  Colin
  10. I'm sure I detected a little clutch slip on the pi last night :B Maybe a clutch and gearbox swap in the next couple of weeks. Gotta change the front wheel bearings and put in some shacktune spacers and check a prop UJ too. Colin

  13. I had similar on the estate during the 08 RBRR, I bypassed the lever harness and switch (whilst Dad drove through the highlands) and all was fine. Changed the lever harness and it has been fine ever since. Colin.
  14. I made one for the pi with a spare cap, although I have a Stag m/c and servo. Works perfectly and I always use the EZ bleed :) Colin.
  15. So with a new man at the helm with T6 body manufacture, does that mean that Graham Pearce moulded cars like yours Chris and my Dad's, become T6 mk1s and the new ones are mk2s? I wonder if there are any plans to incorporate an opening rear tailgate like the original steel GT6 body, or even an opening glass section, perhaps side hinged like an E-type coupe rear door. Colin.
  16. I have Stag brakes on the pi and the front of the estate, I use nos pads if I can. They have asbestos in them so be careful and they make the front wheels black but they don't wear the discs and they do brake well. Also much cheaper than the Mintex 1144 (which I would use if I didn't have the nos ones). Colin.

    Pi engine refresh

    With my Pi being the saloon of choice for the RBRR this year and not wanting to repeat Mr.Chatterton's oil use in 2010 some investigation into the oil consumption was needed. BTW it does not smoke on anything like the scale of BWK at the time, so......For something a little different at our local meeting (and because I have been busy recently) I decided to do a compression test in the car park after enjoying my dinner inside. Results were, that with a warm engine the range was 120-135 psi across the six cylinders with no.4 giving the lowest reading. Not that bad ? A wet test was then carried out on no.4 only (as it had the lowest reading)resulting in a new reading of 180 psi. General opinion on these readings and FRanK's smoking habits normally would all suggest worn rings. With this in mind I will be removing the cylinder head and hoping to find standard size pistons and some bore wear which can be honed a little. I have a set of standard Cords rings and a selection of shells and thrusts, Payen gaskets and enthusiasm. I also have 4 weeks roughly to the National! Colin
  19. Pulled the diff out on the pi on the 11th May, new nose seal and rebuilt quill shaft housing along with some superflex diff mounts and a general clean up, paint and new diff oil. Back in the car Tuesday 13th and extensively tested over last weekend 's trip to the NYTW at Runswick. End result was a nice dry but shiny diff. Next project is an engine refresh,(no-one likes following a smoking Pi for 2000miles!) just found the Cords rings and VP thrusts, just shells to look for. Payen gaskets are sitting on my desk at work. Fingers crossed that the bores are standard size and will take a gentle hone Won't know until the head is off and only four and a bit weeks to the 2000 Register National. Better get started. ;) Colin
  20. I use Alec's method except that I disconnect the handbrake cables at the drum and hold the levers tight against the rear of the drum, usually via cable ties around a couple of the wheel studs. If you have already removed the drums and reset the adjusters to their pre-adjusted positions and replaced the drums, when you stamp on the brake pedal a few times you will hear the adjusters clicking up. Repeat a couple of times, reconnect the cables and check handbrake. It should be loads better. As has been said before, if  you had a mk1 with manual adjusters, you wouldn't down-grade to the mk2 self (lol) adjusters. Colin
  21. I understand completely Bill, Dad and I have 3 big saloons between us, leaving Dad's GT6 as the plan D. I hope we don't need to make that choice......call me soft but I think the RBRR is challenge enough without doing it in a spit or GT6. Still a sad decision to have had to make though. Colin
  22. Must be a myth. A good friend of mine owns a company that manufactures Land Rover chassis, they are all galvanised afterwards as are specials that they build for off road competition, winch challenges etc. They never have any back and have been making them for a good few years.

I have a very limited knowledge compared to Jason, but you are correct Tim, the fuel pressure is a little over 100psi on a Pi , mine reads around 108-110 on a good day. Colin
