  1. Certainly the main companies show prices without VAT if the delivery location is putside UK...
  2. You shouldnt be paying VAT twice! Company here should deduct it and its then paid in country of delivery. Unfortunately cant avoid import duty now though....
  3. Best to speak to them directly I think but generally all main components of your box have to be serviceable so just the rebuild kit as sold by the main suppliers is used....
  4. I would imagine hes kept pretty busy and has quite a waiting list?
  5. That sounds exactly like what you want! Ive got four used gearboxes in bits at the moment and selecting the best from each (where compatible) to hopefully end up with a healthy unit although Im still going to have to get creative to repair the mainshaft tip. The end result wont be new (no new components except some synchro rings) but, with the mileage I do, should last me out😁
  6. For the full recondition I would expect the surfaces where needle roller bearings run to be as new (including their surface hardening). The main shaft appears to be available but the input gear is not so I would like to know how this would be reconditioned correctly. Also all clearances in the gearbox should be within Triumphs specification which may require new thrust bearings and sleeves some of which are no longer available... Really you need a company who will dismantle the unit and then talk to you about what theyve found, what they recommend and how far (including expenditure) you want to go.
  7. You were lucky Wendy as I cant believe that included any new gears or fancy machining?
  8. How do you pick a good one though? By now if a used box isnt running well in a car chances are its knackered something, which as said, you cant tell from the outside☹️
  9. With gearboxes you dont have to change anything for the sake of it. Of course as its not a massive job to remove and if it spins plus all gears select ok you could just install it and drive the car to identify any problems with it.... Otherwise you need to dismantle it pretty much completely AFTER taking some measurements of various clearances and then inspect the components. Undoubtedly you'll find some wear on the surfaces where bearings run so then you need to decide if its too much and if you can find replacement bits... Likewise with the gears, synchros, other bearings and clearances measured earlier so you can decide exactly what you need taking into account availability and the limited mileage the car is likely to do in the future. Your not going to get the gearbox as new but by replacing selective bits you can have one for a reasonable cost which will last for years👍 The free to download workshop manual has all the info including the various tolerances.

    New acquisition

I was going to say that if youre thinking of additional engine modifications dont bother getting carburation perfect until you done everything! In the meantime perhaps get a standard air filter set up to work with the original needles?

Blimmey I stand corrected and am pleased to hear it! However in this case Im sure youre in a minority as Ive bought bits from different suppliers before at different prices and they are exactly the same☹️

Its where to get the bits from as its so expensive to get them produced in such limited numbers and then convince customers theyre worth the extra. Wonder if Canley just 'fettle' the parts that are already available which would be more economically viable....

    New acquisition

One thing with spares is that nowadays for many items, due to lack of demand, only one manufacturer makes them (probably in the far east) and so all the stockist are selling the same thing although of course at different prices! Just changed all my indicator lights (except ign) to LED and far better in daylight but havent checked at night yet. For your main beam indicator looks like youll have to get the speedo out of the dash and have a look inside from the back...

The 3 rails is more waggly by design and then the exposed bushes start to wear pretty quickly so making it worse. However it is easier to use and some people prefer that to the modern feel of the single rail change...
  15. yes important to identify exactly what the problem is and admittedly that can sometimes be quite difficult - fuel line blockage, excessive temperatures, leaking pump valves etc
  16. Is all this really necessary for a standard car though? In over 35 years of ownership of my Vitesse (alright not done as many miles as it should😒) I had the original mechanical pump wear out its non return valves so got a very cheap replacement pump and slapped it on with out issue. Then I put new valves in the old one and its ready to go...

Whats his conversion units for Tim?
  18. To be fair I read it (and see on their video) that you set the engine to its correct timing BEFORE removing the old dizzy. Then you install the 123 unit and, without turning the engine, rotate its body until its LED just lights which means your timing is then set as before. You do it up in this position which allows you to start the engine and check the timing with a strobe....

    New acquisition

As far as overdrive gearboxes go the single rail is more robust having both the larger synchro rings and bigger mainshaft tip arrangement plus a gear change mechanism that is less prone to wear. However they are an inch longer than the 3 rail OD and some dont like the operation of the gear change as much as the earlier design... In the end it probably comes down to whatever you can get at a reasonable price (dont forget to factor in all the ancilliary components) and then the cost of it checking/overhauling it. With this last point maybe getting the overdrive version of your current unit would be sensible as then there might be components you can use if needed...
  20. I take it you have set the timing of the new dizzy as per the instructions?
  21. Red white should be to energise starter solenoid.
  22. I cant understand what the red/white wires are doing on the coil as that -ve terminal should just have a dizzy wire (black) to open and close it to earth....
  23. Dont forget theres also the value of talking about the bits youve used in the engine build - could get years of enjoyment from that👍
  24. They have slighter higher compression and different valves?
  25. Must admit just ditched mine recently (although kept the sheet across the door chassis) as intended to keep water away from the mechanisms but dont get caught in rain much these days😀
