Fizzy Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 the lock barrels in the doors of my spitfire are extremely loose, so much so that every time i put the key in them, it feels like im about to rip the barrel out of the door. turning the key actually turns the barrels in the door.is there a way to fix this ? im not entirely sure why it does it, but it really pisses me off as its so bad i dont lock the doors at the moment, for fear of totally mangling the lock. will new locks cure the problem, or is it something wrong with the door ?
thescrapman Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 When they get to that stage it is too late. The holes in the door skins are now worn so much the lock rotates. To fix you need to weld up teh holes and re-shape them.I have never bothered with mine.CheersColin
tim_trinda Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Same problem on my GT6 I was considering these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Triumph-TR-GT6-Spitfire-MGB-MGBGT-Midget-Lock-set_W0QQitemZ200278350621QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item200278350621&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
Clive Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Colin, rather than reweld may stick with sikkaflex (or other polyurethane adhesive stuff)? Seems to stick most thing rather well ;)Would be much less damaging.Clive
Fizzy Posted November 24, 2008 Author Posted November 24, 2008 those door locks sound good, but those keys look shite. :( could i get those keys cut on something more original looking ?clive, what would you stick and what to ?
Clive Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 open up the door and look at the back of the lock. Working from memory as at work, so this may be wrong. BUT I think the locks fit into a hole that has t flat sides, stopping the lock from yurning, and the lock held in place by a spring clip. A decent adhesive may be enough to stop the lock turning in the hole ( I am asuming the flats have worn away making the hole round) I would clean up, make sure the lock works easily, then apply a nicebead on the back of the skin/lock. Maybe a little to replace the gasket on the outside. Clip on, and a litle more adhesive. May make it tricky in the future to dismantle, it is strong stuff.Or do as most do, never lock the doors.Clive
