STAG front wings STRESSSSS

C.A.S Auto Recovery

Hello can anyone tell me or give me an idea which road to go down. I have recently bought my first Stag and like a lot of older cars being a 30 year old Mk2 she has rusty front wheel arches. Well i think they were rusty as the last owner or one of them cut out the wheel arch on one side after trying to drill out the welds on the inner wing bonnet ledge and made a mess of it.  As i have seen in the Rimmer book {not sure if they are that cheap Rimmers} a wheel arch repair panel but i need to know how much of the panel you get as both my wings have been cut round the arches but one more than the other.  And the tops and fronts of the wings are good it seems mad to cut both wings off as i know if i do that then she will not see use next summer as i will more than likely find loads more that needs doing. Has anyone on here used or fitted these panels before. I got many more questions on this car but being self employed dont get much time to play with her but i want her road ready for summer next year. Dont care if she has differant colour panels on her or red primer showing i just want the top down and the sound of that V8 IN MY EARS.  Thanks Carl

Let me start with this is the budget way to attach panels.

I just did this job about 2 months ago.  I replaced both wheel arches with the patch panels from rimmers.  It is not that bad a job but what you must realize is that the panels need to be shaped to fit.  That is slightly bent.

There is a product here in the US called AutoMix by 3M part# 8115.  It is a glue that all the body shops use to attach panels.  They are no longer welded.  Once the panels are shaped then drill small holes through both the new and the old body panels and screw the arches on.  You will need about 10-12 small screws to hold each panel on.  This is the dry fit.  Once you have the panel the way you want it remove the screws apply the glue and re attach with the screws.  Let dry, remove screws, level out with with body filler, sand and prime.  Voila!! repared arches can be done in a weekend for a couple hundred bucks.

Good luck!!

Hello Ohio Stag many thanks for the information. I reckon i will give it a go { when find the time that is  }.  I have yet to make a complete list of everything that needs doing to her but i know there is a bit to do. At least she is running a Rover 3500 V8 conversion with a 4 barrel holley and a police spec auto box and i am told a limited slip diff. All this and i have only driven her onto my recovery truck when i picked her up and off again when i unloaded her into my workshop. So hopefully when i do get her road ready {summer next year i will have a big smile on my face.} Your Stag looks good i really like the wire wheels. Is there a big following of the Stag in America as it must be nice if you get a rust free one as nearly every car in the UK comes with rust as standard from new due to our terrible weather. I was fortunate.  We are the almost original owners (Purchased in 75 with 8,000 miles and it is a 72).  The car blew a head gasket back in the 80's and we parked it in the garage, after several attempts at repair by so-called "British car repair specialists" we gave up.

So now it has only 35,000 original miles.  Lucky for the car because we use salt on the roads here 6 months a year.  I restored it in under 2 months to its current level.  It runs great but the test will be next summer to see if the over heating has been cured when it is warm out.  If it makes it through the summer I'll put a professional quality paint job on it but for now it looks good and runs well.

The following here is slim there are only a few hundred left most have been parted out.

Carl
i use james padocks for my parts they are quite a bit cheaper than rimmers
they also can supply soc official tooling panels
these are a bit more pricey than the remanufactured ones but are manufactured to the original specification and tend to fitt better
they are very friendly service and know a lot about the stags
http://www.jamespaddock.co.uk

robsport are also good and can supply soc panels or try tony hart he has a shop on ebay
and can supply most parts
i dont have any connection to any of these poeple just have had good service from all of them

Paddock, Robsport and SOC Spares all supply SOCTFL panels. As John says, they are slightly more expensive than others, but they fit. This paid off last year when I had to get a new door skin fitted. The body shop had fitted 'pattern' skins before and swore at them. The SOCTFL skin fitted much more easily and the extra cost for the panel was more than saved in labour charges.

Hello all Thanks for the help regarding wings etc. I will try the people you all have mentioned and see who is the best. I can fully understand about buying lesser made panels as i find it in my workshop when a customer wants a non standard part fitting on their car you know it will fit of sorts but not as well as a origanal part. But and here is the but.... The Stag is mine not a customers and its my pocket thats going to hurt with the work she needs doing to her. I have been looking at a lot of other peoples Stags on here and look at mine and think {what the hell have i bought}  Front wings are a mess arches rotten and been cut out by stevie wonder. Rear panel behind drivers door has holes at the bottom leading to the sill and a bit no a lot of filler. Sills look like they need work a front out rigger and a couple of holes in the boot and front valance. YES I MUST BE MAD.... What was i thinking when i bought this car... I have owned every classic Ford 3000E Capris RS Escorts 1600E's Jags Lancia's several Yanks cars trucks and jeeps. Mercs BMW'S etc etc etc the list goes on.  But in my heart since i was a young lad in the 70's the Stag has allways been top of my list. Several women have tried to come between me and my work and love of cars and they are no longer around and i am single. I Know how to use a washing machine and Mc Donalds is not far away. So the Stag is the love of my life she dont moan she dont answer back she is faithfull and she dont mind sleeping on a wet patch.  The only thing that my Stag and a woman have in common are they both want loads of money spending on them. Cheers for now Carl

Hello Adam and all others. If the Stag repair panel gives me 8 inches at top and 4 either side i should be ok i will ring rimmers and ask them for some help. I wish the person who took a grinder to these wings had just left well alone. I am not going to go mad and strip her all to bits as i know if i do that she will just sit there in bits till i get fed up and stick her on ebay. So i will do one wing then the other fit a front lower spoiler from rimmers which i quite like reminds me of the 80's style cars i owned. Where everything was jacked up at the rear had window loovers and JPS racing stripes down the sides while listening to imagination shallamar and loose ends and sporting i tight perm with high lights... Oh i miss the 80's.. Back to modern times with a bump oh dear what a crazy messed up world we live in. I am thinking of joining a club but there seem to be a few. I wont be able to make annual meetings though due to being on call 24/7 so if anyone can recommend a club for not well Stag owners that wont fine me or strike me off if i dont attend AGM'S etc please post a reply with any clubs that might be suitable. Cheers Carl

Hello all well this is a first for me all i normally use the internet for is ebay ebay ebay and from time to time ebay. But now i find myself logging in to Triumph Torque to see who has replied to my postings. Either that or i am now getting old {better go back on ebay and buy a flat cap and some slippers} A couple of people have said about Club Triumph so i might look them up on the super highway net thingy. I had to go see my doctor today as he thinks i got a heart problem called SVT electrics in my heart all to cock, any way he said apart from the tablets he has me on is stress a factor in my line of work. No i said being self employed is S**T but i just bought a Triumph Stag and thats nothing but stress. That was it he forgot about my heart and being a doctor it was Stag this and Stag that. We are now on first name terms he calls me Carl i call him Doctor.  I had an email from Canleys today saying they do some Stag parts but they are Herritage parts so i got to check my book of OE numbers { i aint got one of them books where do i get one from}  to match up numbers to what they have to fit a Stag. Oh well enough waffle I picked up a new set of NGK'S today for the Stag if i get time this weekend i will fit them and give her a heavy run round the farm {but not in the mud} Speak to you soon Carl
