Non O/D to O/D conversion help please

Hi,

Hopefully someone here is particularly knowledgeable on this.

Just wondered how straight forward it is to change from non-overdrive to overdrive on a Mk2 GT6

Apart from needing the gearbox loom, a new +ve supply, and correct gearstick, is it a straight swap.

Are the propshafts specific or will a non OD mate straight on the OD ‘box

Also, will the bell housing swap straight over?

Any wisdom greatly appreciated

cheers,

Derek

You need the complete "package" of conversion parts:

Overdrive gearbox (with overdrive attached!)

Overdrive prop, shorter than the non od type

OD rubber mount and chassis plate

OD speedo cable and angle drive

OD switch. On mk2 GT6 it should be on the steering column, or use the stick/switch off the mk3

With D type OD (std one fitted to the cars) you need the loom AND a relay

Bellhousing/clutch etc all the same

Memory fade now. It "may" require the propshaft tunnel cutting back a little, and then a cover-plate fitting after. Or than may just be spitfires...

Getting picky here, the non-od GT6 came with a 3.27 diff, od type with 3.89. OD top gives exact same rpm as non od top with those ratios. If keeping the diff, it will be quite long-geared in OD top. You may, at some point, consider a ratio swap? 3.63 would be my choice...

I may have missed something off that list...

Once everything ready, I would allow a morning to do the swap.

Yes, I had to cut mine back for access buy I fitted a Spitfire cover. This one is on ebay at the moment.
