and here is the beast

it has had some welding sone to the DS sill and both rear arches, the respray is slightly off colour , a good cut on the original paint should make it all match again.

the boot lid is a bit bent from being slammed shut, might see if i can find a good straight one.

Rebuilt motor, master and slave cylinders, new alternator, rebuilt dizzy

not bad for $2995  ~   1,251.71 GBP

Nice car... weirdly enough I drove past it a few weeks ago in Midland (I recognise the Kalamunda plate) and gave it a wave... which was returned.

I have a rust free spare bootlid for free if your interested... it's bamboo in colour and very very slightly bent at the back (more the chrome strip than anything).

It's off my wife 2500S that I dismantled

drop us an e if interested

It's uncanny Roly ... mine has the very same bend - probably not that unusual?

I saw your numbers on another site, and the exciting results are ...

your engine is 'older' by 2,356

But the VIN is 590 'newer'

So, that doesn't really mean much does it?

I'll show you mine if you show me yours!

Vin 2MP7714DLOP

Eng MM454457HE

HE is the high compression, I think.
MM is the 2.5 S 'code'

The 2 at the start of the VIN is the Aussie market ... I think I read that somewhere.
P could be PAS? (hmm)
Mine had no sign of factory fitted A/C like yours and their isn't any differences in the codes. It has what appears to be an original fit electric fan on the front (still works too).

Perhaps someone else knows what all those letters mean?

At the risk of seeming pedantic

MB = Mk1 2000 Engine and commission
MD = Mk1 2.5PI Commission
CR = Mk1 2.5PI Engine
ME = Mk2 2000 Engine and commission pre facelift
MG = Mk2 2.5PI Engine and commission
MK = Mk2 2500TC Engine and commision Australia 1973
ML =  2000TC Engine and Commission 1975on
MM = 2500TC Engine and commission 2500S Engine 1975on
MN = Facelift 2500PI (Engine?) and commission
MP = 2500S commission

DL = saloon
SC = estate
O  = overdrive
BW = Auto
P = PAS
HE = high compression
LE = low compression

And there are probably a few more weird ones

Blimey that was pedantic.......

nothing wrong with being pedantic andy, esp when you're right!  yep, the MM simply means a 2500 carb engine over here, but we see the occasional MK as well, presumably imports from aus.  i've never seen an MN or MP over here, but i haven't seen them all.  the engine in the mark I i've just bought is from a late model S and it's an MM.  an interesting beast, fitted with what i'm told is a cam with a TR4 profile and an odd freeflow, 6:2:1, but the old fashioned design with the ports 1,2,3 and 4,5,6 grouped together.  i'm sure it's not efficient but man, does the thing fly.  torque for africa.

Andy, you've taken all the mystery of the strange letters and numbers away ... life will never be the same again :-)
I have this vision of you typing it all out straight off the top of your head!

... however, armed with that knowledge I can at least work out a bit more detail on where my ME engine came from.

Philip - sounds like you've got a feisty one there. Have you had it on the track yet?
