GreenV8Machine
brought my 2000 out of the restoration hut for the first time today, and under mild-hard acceleration the steering freezes up unless jerked out of it. any thoughts?
mikeyb
power or manual? Could be stiffness in rack or a stiff UJ in the column to rack link. Need to split coupling to eliminate!
GreenV8Machine
split the coupling? how will drive it to find out?!
mikeyb
you won't be able to drive it but you will be able to spin the column and move rack separately by hand to see how it feels and also exercise the link shaft uj to ensure they move freely.silly question - is everything under the car bolted down tight? Also how are the ball joints? thescrapman
PhilIs that as you accelerate you don't get self-centering so the steering will stay at an angle and you have to physically steer to maintain direction??Is it fine whan you are cruising or slowing down??If only when accelertaing it must be related to geometry changes as the arse squats down and the nose goes up. Is it still std Mk1 2000 or have you changed anything???You do need to split the coupling to find out if it is the column or the rack.CheersColin
GreenV8Machine
I think its a combo of worn rack, worn joints and maybe some sloppy bushings. Ill check it all on the ramp, cheers for the tips fellas. Cant wait to get the 2000 on the 10CR!
piman
Hello GT6,does it go tight in places when turning the wheel from lock to lock. That points to one of the steering column U\j's being seized. This is not an uncommon problem.Alec
