gfewster
I'm trying to figure out which value I need from James's cam comparer, but it's stumped me.So I set no. 1 cylinder to TDC (at the end of the compression stroke) - through how many degrees should I then turn the engine before I set either the inlet valve or the exhaust valve at maximum lift? It's the before and after TDC thing that confuses me. It says that my TH5 should have the inlet valve at full lift 103 degrees forwards from TDC, but surely if the piston reaches the top of the compression stroke and fires, the next valve to open is the exhaust valve? Or does 'forwards from TDC' mean 'degrees before TDC'?My brain is melting, not to mention my valves. Any advice please......
CharlieB
No 1 inlet valve should be fully open 103° AFTER TDC.
CharlieB
Sorry missed your first bit. Set No 1 piston to TDC at the end of the EXHAUST stroke ie both valves should be slightly open at this point.

gfewster
So we're talking about TDC at the end of the exhaust stroke, rather than TDC at the end of the compression stroke?

CharlieB
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you really need one on a road car. You can get pretty close with a standard duplex pulley & 1 or 2 degrees either way won't make much difference.
