Floyd thanks for this I hadn't thought of looking at Canley's Webb site. I wonder if you could use it as a master and if it would fit a Mk2 engine? Would the manifold work for modern efi? Just dreaming..... Martin
-
I believe that the originally the Stag was designed to have a 2.5 V8 running on Lucas(?) injection. I don't remember seeing any photos of these prototype engines? Does anyone have any detail or photo's at all? Martin
-
Clive that is a fair point but you can always dream ... Martin
-
But isn't it all about the sound with the V8! But I agree with you. Perhaps I should just open up my current boxes and take some padding out of it? Martin
-
I have noticed on the Robsport webb site they list "freeflow" exhaust boxes as far as I can tell they look the same as normal boxes. So are they standard size just with less sound deadening in? Has anyone used them and if so do they may any difference to either sound or the performance? Martin

So the IWIS chains I assume are Simplex but how is it they last so much longer? Do you need a longer life tensioner too? I like the idea of a fit and leave for 100,000 miles chains but is it really this simple as fitting IWIS chains? Also it appears that some "German" chains are not German but copies? (from China?) what are the recommendations as to what to look for when buying chains/tensioners for a Stag? Is there any modifications to steer clear off? thanks Martin

Just thinking about a re veneered dash for the Stag. I seem to remember that there is an issue with the choke cable on the Stag and threading it back through? Once you have taken it out. Is this correct or did I dream it? thanks Martin P.S. any recommendations on where to get a re veneered dashboard I would be interested. Ideal I would like to buy one outright and replace it at my leisure keeping the car on the road. Rimmers want £680 !

Clive I brought some with the view of improving the lights at the back of the Stag and I couldn't tell the difference. I was hoping they would be brighter Martin

There is an interesting thread on the Spitfire/GT6 forum about LED headlights. A lot of it is relevant to Stags/2000. Has anyone fitter new LED bulbs to the existing headlights (I am assuming mine isn't sealed beam!) What do people think? Martin

I had a Spitfire for 30 plus years and I've now sold and brought a Stag. Over the years I collected a number of difficult or rare bits to keep the car going. Now I have a Stag which items should I purchase that may be difficult to get in the future? Some suggestions so far: Ignition Barrel. No longer in production and becoming expensive second hand. Stag Gearboxes. A beefed up 2000 box but becoming expensive as a second hand spares Stag engine. Always the weak point of a Stag. It would be good to buy a complete spare and consider building it up as a rebuilt engine? So is there any trim, mechanics or body panels I should be buying up and storing or would I just be making the spares situation worse for everyone else? Martin

DJT it looks like the piece of foam is missing as you suggested. I may have another look at that and see if I can add something that pushes the lib out. Some good ideas thanks Martin

I have an annoying but simple issue with my glove box on my Stag. The lock locks and unlocks fine but to actual open it you can't just push the button and it opens you need to put the key in in and push the key. I am guessing that you can push the button further in with the key in it and I am guessing that with all the wear that there isn't enough movement to move the catch just using the button. I have tried soaking the lock in WD40 to free it up I have tried adjusting it to take out the slack to no avail. Is there something simple I am missing to make this work? Martin

So I am used to a Spitfire diff that comes out in one piece none of this fangled two part diff in the Stag. The actual reason is that the diff is rumbling is the reason why I was going to take it out. So if this is the case I can get away with just the diff and leave the front housing in place? Saying that I bet I get it out and I'll get it out and see the front oil seal housing needs replacing! Thanks for all the inputs Martin
-
This winter I will have to take my diff out as it is whining. On talking to Richard Brake he suggested taking all the rear suspension off in one piece which sounds a lot of work. I'm not doubting Richard but what do other people think. On my Spitfire it wasn't to bad a job to drop it out on the Stag it seems more of a challenge? Martin.

So if you want a car that sounds like a Ford Focus then a Zetec is your engine. Don't forget to take torque into account too? Martin (Starting to miss my 2,5 Spit!)

The 1500 spitfire has 71 BHP in the UK was it different in the rest of Europe? So plus 20% = 85.2 bhp? But its not all about the power its torque too Hope this helps? Martin P.s. I still think a straight 6 is better that a Zetec

Andy I look forward to you taking you GT6 round it! Martin P.s. No comments about me doing it in the Stag!

If you do get them very close to the boot floor I would put some heat insulation inside the boot to make sure you don't get the spare to warm (and your other boot contents)? Martin

So to add my two pennys worth I have my fuel pipe routed round the front of the block in rubber pipe and it seems to be ok. It is a 2.5 litre. I do have a Facet fuel pump mounted by the battery and I have got rid of the mechanical pump as it couldn't pump enough pressure under load! Not sure if this helps or hinders. Martin

I would agree with Mr Brake. Where I can I get all I can from Canleys. I can't ever remembering having a problem with them. My water pump house was a straight replacement I can't even remember doing it so it must have been painless! Martin

So does this mean I should be running some really narrow cross plys on the Stag! 😉 Thanks for the input it has been appreciated Martin

Gents thanks you for the many an varied views. I think if I clarify that it is pure road use. Interesting to see one recommendation of higher on he front than the rear. I think I will try upping the back to 30 first and see what happens then look at upping the front by 2psi. All the tracking has just been set up so that should be ok. Martin

I agree with Tim I have a Canleys one on my 2.5 Spitfire no issues with it. I would suggest Canleys over Soc even though SOC are closer. Canleys stuff turns up the following day just had two GT6 door glasses delivered yesterday from Canleys. All arrived safe and sound Martin
