1. I have a daft diff question again-and od  gearbox question In prep for being allowed in the shed again next week and fitting me new second hand box /diff etc -which grade of diff/oil should I be using again? Is it 80/90 GL4 ? that can be used in in box and Diff? GT6M - will get me sel a big socket and knocking stick to take the clinky clonk diff apartr next week so we can see whats happened!
2. Which motor is this? I've some standard six pot manifolds you can have?
3. I agree with Tim that most the stops are competitive and its up to us to make the choice if we think we have time etc to duck off and find cheaper fuel personally the ones that I will be planning not to fill up at will be Blythe and Godamnawfull services (Gordarno)
4. so how about this for a plan track down a second hand diff not requiring thrusts and then replacing bearings ?  so anyone out there will to flog me a diff in need of just berings and selas?!! GT6M- That chick has bite....whats her name would she like a holiday in somerset?
5. I know you are all looking forward to internal pics of knackered diff but went to take it to bits and realized I didn't have a big socket to take the pinion nut off to get things started! doh so will order my self a big tool via one of those web sites that keep promising me a big tool, what size is it? looks about 1"1/8 ish ? Will have to wait till after half term hols Looks like I might have a budget of around £200 to sort the diff -what would you recommend I do? my first thought was to strip it as much as I can myself without the need for specialist tools, identify whats knackered source the parts then take it round to GT6Ms house for him to put it back together for me! in exchange for 2 gallons of somerset cider of course! So where to get bits?
6. sounds like a good idea for me to scribble all these gems down and post up a spreadsheet on shedtune me thinks!
7. thescrapman wrote:Andy We downloaded supermarket POI's for a sat nav a few years ago. That helped. But you have to do teh sums and work out how much fuel you use dropping off route and returning to it against the increased cost on route. Cheers Colin Fair point -the bridgwater one is ideal as its only a mile off the Mway  https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=ta6+4rr&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x4872062696ebbab7:0xa1f2ab2440cb1c99,Bridgwater+TA6+4RR&gl=uk&ei=VKrIT7zKAtGu8QPhqY20CQ&oi=geocode_result&sqi=2&ved=0CAgQ8gEwAA
8. The title of thread says it all! I'm trying to put together  and "unofficial" list of fuels stations just off the motorway sections of the route that don't pull your pants down and spank you for fuel- feel free to PM me suggestions - an example being the new  24 hr shell/budgens petrol station  just off the M5 at Bridgwater -placed in the middle  of the M5 stretch which has  Gordarno Sedgemoor , Bridgwater and Exeter services all of which are operated by Moto and the like and have people standing by on the forecourt waiting to pull your pants down
9. Had a similar problem once it was a tiny bit of grit stopping the flow back as per GT6M describes (it was a 2000 master but similar principles) did you strip and clean the "new" master before fitting they can sometimes have shelf shite in them I never fit hydraulics straight off the shelf I always strip and "lube" up (one for smithy there) before reassembly and installation ...it also ensures the spotty YTS lad put the thing together right in the first place!
10. Cheers for the advice -Hate to admit I am of the thinking I should really do the job proper and recondition one of them I was thinking of throwing the one on the right in and just using the car but time is a cruel mistress for me and I hate having to go back over stuff to take it out again to put a recon in and waste time ....Unless anyone has a decent one out there for sale? There is a local firm run from a farm in the village called gear change who recon gearboxes and diffs might go check them out ,who supplies the best parts for diff re-builds at the moment ?
11. michael_charlton wrote:Looks like the one on the right.....gives more percussion accompanyment to the music ;D Seriously...........if we can ever take you serious............the one on the right You can fit the one on the left  to your lawn mower........it might make a bit of DIFF RENCE... Very good!
12. Right back to diffs! Which one would you use? diff A on the left or diff B on the right  (I will be replacing the oil seals which ever one I use ...if any!) Opinions and smut welcome ...cheers http://youtu.be/WfXWZsiW2ts
13. Not sure of movements but give me a call I should be in all day...welsh water pah! Anyway got the diff out tonight - I vastly over exaggerated there is  only about 1.5 mm play on the front flange up and down ..the spare has no play so I'm guessing that the pinion bearing has some play ...but I'm still not convinced that was making all that noise! Had a good fiddle with the prop (one for Don there) and sliding member there is play in that as well and it sounds like a 2000 drive shaft does when its spline locking (full of gone off  grease?) when you try and slide the said member (GT6M you have a lot to answer for with you sliding member descriptions!) it feels rough! So my plan- Refurb prop                 - replace diff pinion bearing                 -replace drive shaft UJs whilst got it in bits just to tick them off the list of possible causes..plus one is showing slight signs of spinning  a cup after the 10cr Comments suggestions and smutty jokes  welcome
14. Ah ha that's what I thought you might of meant cheers for the advice.. nice noise isn't it! it was like that when we set off and was still working 2,500 miles later! will get it on the bench tomorrow and have look see
15. GT6 M Have a look at this clip you can here it better! ideas? as to what it is ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KiquuBEjSM&feature=youtu.be
16.
AJ thats the sound Ive hope fully got rid of. comes mainly on over run, very light throttle. and it was a worn sliding  member. but yours may be diff, as its really hard to say wid oot seeing / hearing it. bung up what ye find. M Ohhh, what and where was the bit int News and Deekaboot   [ time and star / evening nes,!! } cant see any thing  aboot 2 pairs of troosers not thinking of this are ye,  :p http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=R2EjelEQgPw
Sorry to be thick "sliding member" where that then? -no reference to or pun intended re the news and star story and how to fix it?
17. this one ! http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/unconscious-flasher-discovered-in-street-1.955912?referrerPath=news
18. ah would help is I posted the link! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfFrwnZYipE&list=UUpj7vW_9l2wOcueSw745R5g&index=1&feature=plcp
19. Its more of a clonky donk listen to this going into the first hairpin(just after I stay sticking throttle) -the only play I can fin is in the pinion bearing - BTW prop and all UJs ok etc
20. 796 wrote:Aha, I see now, 1/4 play in  / oot, is not good news. if you see a nut with a cover on it on the diff drive flange , its a   [supposedly ] collapse able spacer. M Will post some pics up of what I find! Nice headline in evening news and star the other day!!!!! you havent been wearing two pairs of trousers have you! :)
21. 1684 wrote:Maybe I need to connect it to 10 v supply as the other gauges Yes 240v AC from the inverter pluged into the fag lighter might throw it off a little! :)
22. I can generate the clunk only by laying under the car and pulling the flange the prop bolts onto backwards and forwards about 1/4" which I'm guessing is a shagged completely collapsed collapsible spacer or pinion  bearing? -up till now I've only been used to Triumphs with Quill shafts! so its a similar fault as a shagged quill shaft bearing in my head! if you see what I mean? As for the watery diff oil I have saved that in a jar and will be putting it on Ebay with the remains of an Olympic stud  :) I've got a new pinion bearing etc to fit,Homer is staying for a few days "Holiday" so we might wip it out(the diff that is) Thursday and have a look - So with it on the bench and it stripped without the special tools needed to prise the big bits out what I'm I looking for? in terms of wear that wont last the RBR? - (My budget is about two shedtune Olympic lighters) so if I can sort a diff just using the bits I've got that would be great Nick up for a pint of Mugley Wuggly in the Burtle in with me and Homer ?!!
23. What would you do? drop the diff in the car you think/ know is good apart from the pinion bearing -replace the bearing and put if back in or put an unknown spare in which currently has a snapped stud stuck in the spring mount which will need drilled and tapped The diff in the car did the 10CR with a shagged pinion bearing the clunk got no worse all the way round- what are the chances of something else being shagged after I fix the pinion bearing? I'm in a quandary! thinking I will fix the pinion bearing and run that diff hoping nothing else was shagged as I know this other one has sat around a while (I've drained a lot of sludge and watery oil out of it!)
