  1. For what it's worth, I would say that the seats in my x-type are my only complaint about the car. They seem comfortable at first, but after about half an hour I find they get quite uncomfortable and some of the supporting structure seems to dig in - anything over an hour and I get a dead leg. They are the "Sport" seats (half leather), if that makes a difference. Of course, I could just have a fat arse.
  2. Finally got a day free from work / kids / other stuff which I spent rebuilding the rocker gear - didn't realise until I went to dismantle it just how badly gunked up it was - most of the rockers were sticking, two were actually stuck fast to the shaft - so much so that I couldn't even dislodge them with a vice and tool #001 (club hammer). Managed to smash two of the pedestals trying. Anyway, new shaft and cleaned rockers (including a couple salvaged from a spare set), and it's all moving freely at last!

    Piston Removal

Without an engine in front of me, I'm pretty sure that they have to come out of (and go back in via) the top. The crank is on the way at the bottom, and removing this would be much more involved than lifting the head off - and even if you did this and took them out from below, you'd never get a ring compressor in from the underneath to get the them back in again.
  5. Two questions for the price of one today. Having just refurbed the cylinder head, I thought I'd best tidy up the rocker gear too. Having cleaned off the "wet" oil, everything is still covered in a very tar like residue which I'm presuming is congealed oil - any tips for removing it? De-greaser these days doesn't seem to shift stuff. Second question - the shaft itself has considerable wear an scoring - I've heard bad things about the replacements currently available, but in the absence of a better solution, it looks like this is the route I'm going - but how bad are they - bad enough not to work, or just prone to fast wear?
  6. Went to get some spares off a GT6 once, and the blokes cat had taken to sleeping in it. It was getting in through the hole in the floor!
  7. Why collect? Aren't they free delivery? Also - try the code "lastchance25" - gave me 25% off compared to the 15% offer.
  8. Bradley, For what it's worth, I've got a six pot mounted length ways on one of those small stands, and it does the job. They are better suited for gearboxes as they feel a bit unstable, but that said, I've never actually knocked it over (yet). I've also got a chunkier sealey one http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPage.....p;requiredresults=16 and they are much better.
  9. Right gents - another HS6 question: I've got two pairs of HS6s here - one pair have a throttle return spring on the carbs, the other don't (I presume that these rely on a return spring mounted in the linkage) - any thoughts as to pros / cons? I would presume that by fitting the return springs to the carbs rather than the linkage would mean a simpler linkage layout, but anything else to consider? Also - with regards to the petrol feeds - from what I can see, everyone has teed the fuel line and sent separate lines to each bowl - is there any advantage to this as opposed to taking the bowl-top from the Spit which takes a single feed into the rear carb then has an output feed to the front one - I thought that this might be a neater set-up?
  10. Apologies for reviving an old thread, but does anyone know where I can get hold of the triumphtune adapter plates?
  11. Wow - thanks for all the info guys. PDU - have you been in my workshop... And just to show the full extent of my "buy now, think later" problem:
  12. So here's the thing. I've been doing the 6 cylinder conversion on my Spit using parts gathered from all over the place, and as a result I've ended up with a pile of carbs (all in pairs, I should add) of unknown origin and condition. The time has come to make a decision and actually fit some now - I was intending to service and fit a set of strombergs for the time being rather than faff with the HS6s that I'm thinking about for the future. Putting the two pairs of strombergs on the bench, I've just noticed that they are different - it seems that I have one pair of 150CD and one of 175CDSE (although both only say "CD" on the dashpots, with no distinguishing marks. So, is there any advantage of one over the other? Are both interchangeable on the inlet manifold? Is there anything else to consider, or should I just decide which look to be in the better condition? Thanks, Neil

    Water pump.

How freely should a new water pump turn? I've just bought a replacement one, but it feels to my mind that there is too much resistance - it doesn't "spin" if turned by hand, for example, the friction stops it as soon as I let go - is this normal?

  15. Yeah - did that once with the four cylinder engine, but the six pot is a different challenge altogether!

I have one on long term loan from a family member (think he's forgotten that I've got it) that's a home made jobbie, and waaaay stronger than anything I've seen for home use. It really came into it's own when I had the front end of my spit stripped to the chassis rails and needed to move the car sideways - just hoisted the whole front of the car up and pushed it away from the wall. Check out this bad-boy: BTW, and I really have to ask, what's the cricket bat used for?
  17. He he - mine took a wire wire-wheeling before I got to the size inprint - about three coats of Hammerite had covered them over. I believe that the 5J's were fitted to late Spit 1500's, and the 4.5J's were standard on the mkIV and early 1500's, as well as MkIII GT6's. The 5.5J's came from Formula Ford.
  18. the size should be stamped on the front - presuming that you are talking about the Spitfire style 5.5J's - although if they have been re-painted this marking may be lost under the paint.

  22. Out of curiosity, what torque did you do the caliper bolts up to? I'm about to put mine back together - I've read 45-50ft/lbs for the outer bolts, and 70-80 ft/lbs for the inners - anyone have any conflicting info on these figures? Cheers Neil
