  1. Thanks Clive - yes, it has just the single downpipe....
  2. ..A question from an 'interloper' from the Herald section........ I've got a 1200 Herald convertible, manufactured late '64 - under the bonnet is a 1300 Dolomite engine no. DH87728HE (if that no. can be de-coded or means something to someone, I would love to be told....) The mild steel exhaust has been temporarily welded & is now getting noisy again. Am looking to put a stainless system on so wondering if the 1300 Dolly manifold is the same as the Herald 13/60 as a 1200 one definitely won't fit... Many thanks, in advance, for any help.........
  3. Thanks Nick...All I know is that it's angled back rather than vertical such as the 1200 manifold flange is.......(I think I'll post the question in the Dolomite section asking if the 1300 Dol. man. is same as 13/60....)
  4. ..I've got a 1200 convertible with a 1300 Dolomite engine (SU carb.) I have access to a stainless back box - which I understand are common to the 13/60 & 1200 according to the part nos......but I need a front system. Can anyone confirm that the 13/60 front pipe(s) will do the job & which fitting-kit I need to order, as I presume the 1200 one will have the wrong manifold or flange gasket.....(There can't be too much difference between the fitting kits, can there, apart from that....??) My car probably dates from Oct./Nov. 64 & was reg. beginning of Feb. '65.......... Many thanks, in advance.
  5. Have a 1300 Dolomite in my 1200 conv...(fitted before I got it..) It has a single SU carb. Am just about to order a front exhaust pipe in stainless - presume I need the 13/60 front pipe(s).........????

    Engine Paint

I've heard that ordinary 'rattle-can' paint is ok.....as an engine doesn't get hot enough to cause a problem - externally, at least....
  7. ...An upgraded UJ bottom column joint makes a big difference, then Nick?.....(I'm just waiting for Bill to get some in stock..........) Decided that's the way to go as my last replacement of the conventional type hasn't managed 2yrs... :'(....(that one WASN'T from Bill, I hasten to add.... :X)
  8. I would have thought deterioration would have been more gradual than that, if it was a worn clutch....??
  9. Thanks very much, Clive........(& for moving the post to its rightful spot, if it was you........ :B)
  10. My old 1200 conv. has had a leaking clutch system for ages....it appears to have a diaphragm clutch. It has what appears to be the original non-sychro box with the car probably being manufactured during Oct./Nov. of 1964. The engine, however, is the 1300 Dolomite unit. Is there only one type of slave-cylinder that can fit..?? (I don't want to get the wrong one....) Also the exhaust pipe really needs replacing. I have access to a stainless back-box, but do I need to fit the front system for a 13/60....?? Many thanks in advance for your expertise................

    Tyre sizes

2276 wrote:I will just replace them rather be safe than sorry not sure of age of rubber the last thing I want to do is spend all this time and money on getting the car together to have a blow out and wreck the thing!! If yours is a 'show car' it might be worth getting another set of rims & keeping the crossplies for 'originality' purposes for when the car is exhibited........ 'Crossplies' per se are fine........I did 47k in a '56 MGA - most of 'em on on ex VW Beetle 5.60x15 crossplies....Having said that, your other correspondents are right in that the possible age of the tyres are an important factor.......
  12. I run my 1200 converible on 5j Spitfire/Dolomite rims at 27psi front & 30 rear.....(on the basis that the original handbook gave the front tyres as 3psi less than the rear...) No undue wear......

  14. I don't have any problem with the large(ish) flat woodrim I've got in my 1200 conv. - having said that I jumped in the other week & snapped off the indicator stalk!!  :B Had a smaller flat-rim 'Moto-Lita' on my then MGA, years ago - I seem to remember sanding it & giving it a couple of coats of marine varnish...a great wheel & the finish never deteriorated & I'd drive through rain in that car, topless with the tonneau zipped back.
  15. ....Yes, that early a car should remain 'stock' as there must only be a handful of the earliest left...You can justify a Vitesse, in addition (or 13/60 which would be easier to put a bigger engine in) on the basis that the little 948 will only cost you a small amount in insurance & not only will the tax discs be free on both cars, but you won't even have to shell-out for an MOT on the '59er'...!!!  :)
  16. ...I know radio/sound units can be fitted isolated.....don't know about alarm systems - would have thought it was possible!!..??
  17. Ah...that clarifies the 'B' plate - thanks Mark & Bill.
  18. It looks a delightful little car......one of the oldest 1200s (particularly convertible!) out there..?? Wonder what the story is with the 'B' reg. no......
  19. I'm sure I read somewhere (probably a 1200 handbook) that the equivalent 5.20 crossply radial is 135..!! Have mentioned this before on here, a while back & was asked if I could find where I'd quoted it from - needless to say, I have'nt, yet, but will.... ..I've acquired a set of five 135s but cannot report on them, as they're not on the Herald wheels, yet - still have the 175/70s on Spitfire wheels, which were on the car when I got it...
  20. Quite an undertaking, chaps......great stuff & well done! Will be a lovely car when finished.
