  1. You see, he loved it really!! Still, if he managed to sell it and raise £20 for charity.......

  4. Must be crap paint on Acclaims..... I'm sure you'll realise a healthy profit.  And no, I'm not buying it!
  5. It's the washers and bush which wear and make the steering heavy, you can replace all these for a few pounds.  I guess the NOS topmount is only the bonded rubber part and won't include all the thrust washers etc. You only need to replace the rubber part if it's breaking up.
  6. A local exhaust place fitted mine - any should be able to, just gave them a pile of stainless bits, went to the nearby Morrisons, had a massive breakfast, came back, it was all fitted to the car.  Easy. I hated my semi sports exhaust.  Far too noisy.
  7. I took my diff to a local (Stag owning) transmission specialist, he replaced the output seals, which were leaking, for about £20.  He also said that the leather input shaft seal was an antique item even when the cars were new and that a sprung rubber type is far better.

Stunned, passed the MOT first time today, emissions where so low the MOT did a diagnostic on his machine as he was sure it was broken! You've finally dragged yourself into the '80s, no need for 20/50 treacle any more!!

Nick_Jones wrote:Originals were 175/80 R13.  I'm pretty sure that the only ones you'll find that size now are intended for vans and not really suitable for car use.  You should be able to find 175/70 R13 easily enough though.  Will shorten the gearing a little but not too serious. Nick Most tyre places can order the correct 175/80 x 13 car tyres. As I say don't get stiffed with van tyres, I drove a 2000 so equipped and it was terrifying.
  10. You should be able to get 175 x 13s without too much trouble but make sure you don't end up with van tyres - they can be way too stiff, scary in the wet.
  11. That's right, just the oil seal at the front of the diff.
  12. Check for air leaks all around the inlet side too and if you have any sort of engine breather make sure there are no split diaphragms etc which will lead to a weak idle mixture.
  13. Often, a 20 tonne press isn't man enough to shift those flanges. I've heard of people 'shocking' them off (whacking with a big hammer) but be careful not bend the flanges or damage the stub axle. Any decent gearbox or transmission place should be able to press them off for you, or get exchange ones from the usual places.
  14. I got a 13 PSI cap from Halfords which did the trick on my 2000.  I think the cap was for a Ford Capri. On Triumphs, the 7PSI and 13PSI rads sometimes had different bayonet fitting making it awkward, but still possible to fit the 13PSI cap to a 7PSI radiator.
  15. I think they were called Mitsubishi Colts in the UK. And the wheels don't suit the Triumph........
  16. It shouldn't ever really get empty. First check the coolant level in the radiator.  If it's too low it's possible the engine is overheating which will pump coolant into the expansion bottle.  Top up the radiator and fill the expansion bottle halfway and see how you get on. You could also have a faulty radiator cap.  Yours may not be allowing the system to pressurise and could constantly allow coolant to pass to the expansion bottle as the engine warms up. It could also be poor coolant circulation caused by a dodgy water pump or blocked radiator.  You get hot spots in the engine, the coolant turns to steam and can force water into the expansion bottle. Check all this before you start worrying about blowing head gaskets etc.
  17. How full is the expansion bottle when the engine is cold?  It should be about half filled so there is space for the level to rise as the coolant warms up and expands.
  18. Do you pass Lesmahagow on the M74 on your leisurely trundle around the country?  There's a Morrisons (or it may be a tesco or some other large generic supermarket) just off the Northbound motorway there with cheap petrol.  It's a bit more awkward to get to when heading South.
  19. It was new dampers rather than springs which stopped my 2000 cornering on its door handles...............
  20. Mondeo?  You'd be as well just getting a new car................
  21. If you have a worn dizzy then replacing it with an unworn one will make a huge difference.   My dizzy seems OK and the car runs beautifully on points with almost no maintenance which is why I'm reluctant to change anything.  However I would like to fit a new coil.............. Another thing which puts me off is that everyone I know who has fitted electronic ignition has suffered a failure of the electronic parts at some point (including those who've fitted 123 systems) so the ability to fit points to get you home could certainly prove useful...................
  22. Bear in mind if you switch to electronic ignition I think you also need to buy a non ballast 12V coil. Must admit I've been thinking of getting a new coil; it almost makes sense to get a non ballast one and SimonBBC ignition kit.

  24. Of course, wheel offset may also affect steering the geometry which amongst other things, could have a bearing on how heavy it feels. Borrow Tim's wheels and try them on your car to see if it makes a difference!
