Clutch release bearing noise?

I changed the slave cylinder before gearbox was fitted. Bought it from Paddocks and it was for a Vitesse 6, which is a 7.8" bore.

This was the old one:

I'll have  alook at it and double check the bore diameter again..if it's the larger wouldn't there be less travel? Could I use a 1" bore, have less travel and therefore no potential problem?

Bear in mind that the springs may rotate in their positions within the plate assembly and the rub marks might be (in my opinion, are) due to contact with moving parts within the friction plate itself.

You'd be surprised how much those springs compress when accelerating and decelerating.

If rubbing on external parts then the marks should be present on all the springs and have matching witness marks on the external parts as well - and you don't seem to have this.  You really have to massively over-stroke a clutch to get that kind of contact. and in fact the friction plate can't get any nearer the flywheel than it's fully engaged position as the friction surfaces of plate and flywheel stop it.

In my experience, clutch noises on small chassis Triumphs and GT6/Vitesse especially tend to get noticed more due to the construction of the car meaning the sound travels very easily.   Make sure the tunnel fits properly at the bulkhead and sound insulation is in place!
