ginger948cc Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 I'm about to do an oil & filter change. I have Castrol GTX 10W-40 which is what I used last year. However ,it does say that it is for modern engines . I think I saw one for older engines. What is best? Thanks for any comments.
Camo Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 I use the 15/50 mineral based stuff from Halfords, it says it is for pre 1980 cars, works for me !Stuart

heraldcoupe Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 I would go for a 20w50 of reasonable quality. I like Duckhams 'Q', but there are plenty of others of equal or higher quality. Cheers,Bill.
Herald Freak Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 I have Duckhams Green 20-50 in the Herald (Mk4 spit) and Valvoline racing 20-50 in the 1500 dolly, Valvoline are now doing a 10-60 which interested me
Dicky Blighter Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 I find the best oil to use in old cars is the one that will wash off the driveway easiest otherwise the missus gets upset.
Tim Bancroft Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 I'm into Duckhams Q 20/50- however on the saloon I will be going the synthetic route as the old thing does not use oil. The GT6 does and will stay on Q.I do not like the idea of using 10/40 in an old car.
ginger948cc Posted June 23, 2005 Author Posted June 23, 2005 I set about getting some Duckhams Q 20/50 today at Halfords in Croydon........they don't stock it!Phoned 3 car accessories shops in South Croydon.....still no luck! Finally successful at "Motos" 133 Godstone Rd. Kenley. (if anyone else has problems locally.)Consuela is now purring contentedly.
