I need to no what size fuel pipe I’ll need to purchase

as some stupid person as used vacuum hose as fuel line 🙈

I gather the pipe coming out the top of the tank is the main feed to pump

then from the pump yet again vacuum pipe 🙈

but also did not have anything the correct sizes as it’s different both sides

is there a proper fuel line for this or is it a gamble

many thanks

Darren.  🍻👍

The fuel pipe should all be solid (originally steel but cunifer is preferred these days) apart from three or four short rubber links. On a Herald I believe it's all 1/4" pipe - the later cars including Mk2 Vitesse used 5/16" up to the pump. Fittings on the pump are usually olives but there's a rubber piece between the pipe along the chassis and the stub on the pump inlet. Many people fit a filter in that bit.

Hi, Just to add to Rob’s comments about the solid pipe, the flexible hoses - which it sound like someone used vacuum hose for - need to be able to take modern fuels. So you’re looking for hose from trusted sources that meet “SAE J30 R9” or “…R14”. If it’s R9 or R14 it won’t permeate fuel and smell and will resit up to E85. Avoid R6 unless you have to for a short period of time, on E10 fuel it’ll break down within a year.

Lots or us use Gates Barricade hose and it lasts well. Not easiest to get hold of sometimes in short runs.

There’s long and slightly boring threads about hose on the forum, have a search for the term “sae” and you’ll find some more info, or reply here with questions 👍

Yes a combination of 1/4 and 5/16" hoses are used. However, I had difficulty in getting a leak proof seal on carburettor connections on my car with hose of nominal 1/4" i.d. I sourced some 5.6mm i.d hose to R9 spec from www.machine7.com. This is recommended for VW models with 6mm o.d. fuel connecftions. It's a snug fit on our cars but easily encouraged with a little rubber grease if necessary. I used clips for additional peace of mind of course.

Beware that some suppliers that look like they should be reputable from their website or eBay listings are Absolute F**king Sh*t and in my experience are selling hose as "R9" when it quite obviously is not.

IMHO look for branded Gates hose OR use one of the reputable Triumph specialists (Moss, Canley, James Paddock, etc.)
