SteveJP
Well, here we are, Car 33 drivers are back home - Heard from the AA today that the car will be repatriated in the next 10-14 days. Excellent service from them, £53 well spent! The cause of our problem occurred early Friday morning (about 2.00am)near Reims on the autoroute when there was a thrumming noise from the offside rear - initial investigation at an Aire didn't show anything so we decided to soldier on at a reduced speed, by the time we got to Dole, the noise was more evident so off came the wheel and brake drum - very hot! the rear bearing had shed all its grease, not having a grease gun, it was replaced and we drove slowly (very) to Morez and arrived there and met many of the others. Consensus was that it wouldn't be realistic to carry on so reluctantly decided to call the AA and retire. The support and concern from the others was excellent and certainly lifted our spirits - we had an excellent breakfast with them at Les Rousses then limped back to Morez - At the time we didn't know we were so close to Switzerland, we could have bagged a third country! Special thanks to Ellis, Ben, Kevin, Tim, Dale and Paul for their support and wishes.( and to the many others whose names I don't know) Why 3 cars? - Spitfire, French Hire car to Calais (A Class) and English Hire car from Calais to home (Grand Punto) We did debate continuing the run in the hire car, but A) we had to go back near to Dijon to pick it up and then not until 2.00 pm Friday and B) we thought it wasn't right to do it in a modern comfortable effortless eurobox - it was different for Ellis and his Saab - the 10CR was his organisation and he was acting as a course car.Our thanks especially to Ellis for his excellent organisation - and for those who read the Canley Classics blog, the sausage rolls were excellent after 50miles at 75mph on the exhaust manifold! Caroline
We're the sausage rolls a bit smelly? Sorry to hear about the retirement, hope the car comes back OK and glad you did manage to take part (I'm a tad jealous!)
SteveJP
No, we wrapped them in foil - we are now thinking of wrapping garlic bread next time we go through France! We are even thinking of preparing a 10CR cookbook for the 2009 run! The route may need to be adjusted to cater for the cooking times - how about Fondue for Switzerland, Lasagne in italy - don't think Pizza will work, not sure about Slovenia - Applestrudel will work well in Austria, Bratwurst and sauerkraut in Germany, Burgers for Luxem, Carbonade of Beef in Belgium, and something in Hollandaise for the Netherlands! May need some sort of shaped foil tray - this is getting silly - too much red wine! (Hic)
