herald948
Not just a Herald/Vitesse question per se, but I figured someone here would know. Older Girling master cylinders had steel caps rather than the alloy of the later cylinders. Does anyone know how those older steel caps were finished? Natural? Plated with something? Painted?Any help/suggestions appreciated; thanks!
mazfg
Not sure...but the metal ones are always a bugger to get off....
Mark Hammond
I believe from memory that they were left natural, I remember seeing rusty ones....M.

Over the years, I've seen a lot of the caps that were painted, and I'm tempted to do that with the few steel caps that I might just be able to save. Otherwise, I know the alloy caps are still readily available (since I bought one a couple months ago)!
Pom Down Under
Definitely unpainted. And yes often rusty. Vaguely recall some tended to look like they had been zinc plated/galvanized, I used a resevoir from a Series Snipe once on one of my cars because it had a low fluid level sensor under the cap. 8)
herald948
I wondered about the possibility of zinc plating, which never did seem to hold up all that well. ;)
Mark Hammond
You could have them yellow pacified perhaps?M.
herald948
Turns out to be a moot point, as none of the three caps I was trying to clean up survived even the softest wire brushing without greatly enlarging what had once been a very tiny breather hole on top. Oh well.... :'(
