Hi
New to this, first time i've posted on here.
I have a triumph mk2 2500 estate. I'm having trouble with the running of my car and was wondering if someone could help me please.
It run's fine with the choke full out when going down the road but when you put the choke back in, it coughs and splutters. When pulling the choke back out again it runs sweet again.
I was wondering if it's sucking air in through the gaskets or is it something else.
I tried to ring Rimmer bros to order a gasket set for the carbs, with this no. AUD607F and he told me these are not the right ones for the car. Does anyone know what these AUD607F are off?
Many thanks, Jamie

Jamie,
AUD607 F & R (Front and Rear!) were SU HS4s fitted to the 2500 TCs of 1975, according to my old TriumphTune manual, though the Haynes quotes HS6s (AUD 678 ).

Rimmers run a telephone ordering dept like a call centre.   I don't think the operators know anything except what's in their book, and if the book's wrong.........
Try a better informed supplier, or a specialist in SUs like Andrew Turner: http://www.su-carbs.co.uk/

Hello Jamie,

assuming no leaks at the manifold to head or the carburettor flange to the manifold I would look at the basic set up.
S.U.'s are very simple to work on, basic checks if you are not familiar with them, needle should be fitted to the piston with the shoulder flush with the bottom of the piston face. While the dashpot is off, screw the jet adjusting nut all the way up until it is flush with the top of the jet tube. Then unscrew two full turns down.

With that basic setting you should be fairly close to being correct, at least at idle. Try that and see how you get on. I would do this before carrying out any gasket replacement etc unless it is visibly leaking fuel.

First up check the carbs just aren't set too weak and need richening up.  I don't know how long you've had the car and if it's ever run sweetly but if it was like that when you got it, that could be the problem.

If it was running OK before and this has started happening check the hoses - the breather ones from carbs to rocker cover and the feed to the servo if fitted.

I've had a running Spitfire fine that started going super weak seemingly randomly and that was caused by a split in the rubber pipe to the servo.  If it opened up it would let air flood in to the manifold down-stream of the carb (so more air but no more fuel).

Hi
Thanks for th advice given guys. Had the car taken to the garage, a lad there knew what needed doing. The carbs needed setting up, it was running too rich. He also tweaked with them (god knows what he was doing to them, think he was trying to make himself look good!!)
Now she's on song again!!!  :)
