philipedgar0901
How do I fill the overdrive gear box with oil, or check the oil level with in it? Any suggestions, I would be very grateful. Phil Edgar. North wales
glang
I dont know this specifically on the TR3 but other Triumphs have a screwed square head plug in the side of the gearbox which is fiddly but should be accessible from underneath. Clean the area, take plug out, pump in oil from squeezy bottle or large syringe with flexible pipe till it starts to run out and then quickly put plug back in. Some people make a permanent hole with coverplate in the gearbox cover to make this job easier. Also a manual, which maybe available free online, is a great help for servicing..... iggy
while your at it you should also undo the big brass plug on the bottom of the overdrive unit this will reveal the mesh filter which can then be cleaned and put back with a new gasket, then fill as discribed above
Hogie
Hi Phil, above info is good. Regarding filling / draining - what type of oil are you going to use? Generally any decent gearbox oil will work well. SAE 30 up to EP90 all run well. Do NOT add any clever additives it will do the internal OD clutch no favours.
