daver clasper
Hi everyone.I have a Vitesse Mk1 2Litre.The starter has recently startes to make a louder ,crunching type noise when engaging (happens about 1 in 6 times).Bit worried it is damaging flywheel ring gear and less importantly starter pinion.Had gearbox out about a month ago and teeth on both were in very good condition IMO, though not an expert. The 2 starter securing bolts are not looseAny advice, as always much appriciated.CheersDave
Mark Hammond
Faulty return spring on the starter bend would be my guess.Mark
Billus99
if its the starter motor, and you can run to the cost, replace it with a high torque one - i did this on my TR4, and my Vitesse, with much better results.

Remove starter, wash down with petrol, carb cleaner or whatever, dry, (lubricate if you like ONLY with a dry graphite lubricant or similar) and reinstall.
