    Head gasket 1500

A few things to check first. Is there oil in the water or water in the oil. Can you see bubbles in the top of the radiator with the engine at normal operating temperature. When was the last time the oil was changed as if it's old then moisture will cause gunge on the filler cap. How was it running a year ago. How was it before your uncle messed with the carbs Is it possible to do a compression test. (cold) Check other threads on blown head gaskets ...may get more/better advice from them Good luck
  7. It's easy checking the mixture at idle with a colour tune or using the lifting pins. But at high revs under load without a rolling road it harder. The best way I have found is to get the car up to speed on a clear road and then turn off  the engine and depress the clutch at the same time. Pull over and take out the plugs and see what colour they are. Be careful if you have a steering lock not to operate that.

    Chrome Door Handles

I changed mine ....lucky to get a pair of ebay for £70 and then sold my black ones for £40. that was about 8 years ago. I dont think there is any difference you should be able to take them apart and get them chromed.

    Piston Removal

Get the car on ramps and then when the heads off you will have plenty of room to get the sump off undo the bigends. then push the pistons out through the top. It's a days work or two if you take your time.

No forcing or other interference, so I assume both threads must be so close they make no difference in so short a length. What fan switch did you use
  11. That's what I want to hear ...someone that's already done the leg work. Thanks guys
  12. I used these. dead easy. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOCAL-HEFP93-8-1-2-90-SELF-ASSEMBLY-OIL-COOLER-HOSE-PIPE-FITTINGS-UNIONS-NX-/121003970580?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c2c661014#ht_2944wt_932 Just cut the length warm up in boiling water and push on the fittings.
  13. Thanks Nick.  I have since found a thread reducer 5/8 unf to M14 with a  M14 threaded switch. which operates at 82c. The fan is already wired at the moment via on/of switch and relay. All I have to do now is fit it and then remove the mechanicle fan.
  14. I'm going to fit this to my 1500 Spit. So I can fit an electric fan switch in place of the sender unit. My problem is the thread is 5/8 UNF.  Can't find a switch with that thread so thinking of a thread adaptor. Has anyone else done this and what adaptor and switch was used.  I don't want to go down the route of drilling and cutting a new thread if I don't have to.
  15. Check the new stub axle has the same amount of thread as the old one. Some of the new ones differ. One I bought had to go back as it had the wrong thread on the end.

  20. This was my first RBRR and had no problem in my Spit 1500. I found using a pillow with earplugs and the seat reclined we managed to get some good power naps. Needed to keep your head facing forward because soon as you put an ear to the pillow you would get all the rear drive train noise. With a few cans of Redbull I cannot remember feeling I was going to nod off anytime. I did feel shattered for a week after though. Can't wait for the next one.

Alex wrote: Danny I would have expected you to get more ...do you have overdrive? what engine do you have etc? :-/ Your mpg is very close to the gt6's figures.....mine has always got at least 40+ mpg on a rbrr.Ask anyone who knows me or my car and they'll tell you I like to work it. Amendment Now that my brain has recovered from no sleep. I forgot I did not have a full tank when starting  as I used at least 5 ltr to the Plough. + I have now recalculated using an online tool. Car 25   Spitfire 1500..... 2284 miles clocked 62.4 gallons used. First 319 miles with the front float bowl flooding and giving those behind me plenty of petrol fumes, she was doing 29.8 MPG, After fixing she did 39.7 MPG. Overall she did 36.6 MPG. So 39.7 2 up with luggage bombing along not too bad.
  22. Thats what my speedo shows at 3,000...also just checked the Minty Lamb site which also shows at 3,000 it should be 69.9 mph. Could be the engines tighter,  What sort of milage did you clock up.
  23. just another thought.... my speedo showed If i remember off the top of my head 2278 miles at the plough.
