  1. had a bit of a panic! I suddenly had a doubt regards to the date, I am booking the holidays with SWMBO and we are planning to join the British Car meeting in Morges, Switzerland, now that's traditionally the first WE of October, just like .... the RBRR. Thankfully Swiss have a different meaning for the first WE, they actually start on the first! So I have a week to shuffle from the shores of the Lake Lemans to UK. Oh and BTW while doing my research on the dates noticed that tim's week at the Blog  doesn't have a Saturday, it goes from Friday 7 to Sunday 8 LOL 😎 D
  2. Boy That took off a flying start! Last year we were entry 109 and this only after much hesitating. To quote Dale's excellent Pink floydiness editorial: No one told you when to run, We (nearly) missed the starting gun.... still we made it Our form is in the Snail mail, (I hope) It might travel another few weeks before it reaches Blighty. Just saying y'r honor... Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash New car, caviar, four star daydream, Think I'll buy me a....... We have the car, I have sort of convinced my Tame Racing mechanic it is useable as a RBRR car, Will need a bit more done to it though, so I'll let the suspense hang a bit longer. Just let it be said that we wear our moniker as a badge of honor! D
  3. what ya waiting for? you know the plan, now get on to it. The only reason I take you is so you can mend and prepare my cars LOL!! D

    fuse box

I should have added for clarity sake that there are 2 ways to rate a fuse, by the maximal current it can carry continuously or by the peak current that causes it to blow generally the little plastic blade fuses used in cars are identified by Amps "Blow" and they have generally a continuous carrying capacity of half the "Blow" value I guess that did not help much 🙁

    fuse box

Hi bob, A 55W bulb draws appx 5 Amps continuous so I have 15A on all lighting circuits with 2 bulbs, Indicators are 20A, 10A on the steering side of relais and 25A on the power side. Actually the load is not important, what you want to protect is your loom against shorts and overheating while still allowing your normal loads to operate. Normal wire size in cars for general use (lights, relays, etc) is generally rated for 9A continuous draw so as a rule of thumb your fuse should not have a higher rating than 18A "blow", which in practice means a 20A fuse. Headlight wires are heavier gauge wires and have a rating of 17A, hence a maximum fuse size of 34A, or in practice again 30A. Autosparks actually has a good table to identify the maximum load on their wires, in summary it reads for normal wire: mm square/amps: 0.65mm/6A, 1mm/9A, 2mm/17A, 3mm/25A or if you use their Thin wall wire(which has a greater number of strands for the given diameter) 0.5mm/11A, 0.75mm/14A, 1mm/17A, 2mm/25A 3mm/33A . Again this is the continuous load the wire can carry As you can see I can not give you a one answer suitable for all situations, not knowing the size or quality of your wires, but except of the Starter motor (which is not normally fused ) and horns you should not need any fuses above 30A and as they say, Caveat something, the above is simplified and if in doubt ask somebody more qualified than I am

    fuse box

Hi Bob, I have wired up the spit with 3 separate fuseboxes The first one is in between the connectors at the A post and the loom, it protects the lighting circuits to the rear and the indicators (tail, stop, reverse, indicators both front and rear 1 fuse per side) The second one protects the relays for headlights and horn plus the wires to the headlights ( I previously suffered a beginning of a fire because I only fused the relays and not the output to the headlights and one of the headlights had shorted) The third one runs off the white wire at the ignition switch and protects the circuits that are life after ignition, the box I had had 10 circuits, which is possibly an overkill but it separates the circuits nicely, heater, wipers, accessories, .... As said it is possibly an overkill, but I wanted to apply some logic to the fusing and separate as much as possible the common circuits. D
  7. Hi John, What is the difference between dolly and spitfire starter ring? Diameter or teeth? D
  8. mmmm, Mine is also to the right of the steering column but on a lhd car. When I bought mine I noticed that they are selling separate LHD and RHD switches, did not look more into it, but perhaps they are angled differently? D
  9. that'll be a handfull then! Not suited for the 10CR either, no space for the luggage oh well perhaps you dont need an overnight bag with this, you'll finish it in one day tops! D
  10. Team Broom, Post it here also so my teammate knows where to have his love letters send, Abdij Rolduc, Hotel Pontechiesa just outside the old town of Cortina, Hotel Engel in Ulm ( no more vacancies when I looked at Seligwiler) Rolduc. We'll possibly take the slightly less hardcore version going over the Tsjimmeljoch. D
  11. boy o boy, I plotted the overnight route in the routeplanner.. They are in for a sweet spot of driving! It is almost a 10CR on it's own, in fact my thoughts were that it would be a shame to tear through this section at night and not taking the time to fully enjoy the route. Anybody wanting the gpx file to upload in their gps PM me, not sure there are no mistakes. on 2 occasions it seemed a bit off and odd. My routeplanner took a detour crossing the Rhine, maybe it was the intention to take a ferry but he did not know of it, and on a second occasion t he WP seemed to be on a little forest road off the main road, but they rejoin a mile or do further. Nah, we'll stick with the easy version this year, specially because we will need our nights in bed  to recover from the rush job to get the Spitty finished in time I assume. D
  12. team broom will not make it either, so count us in for the sneak preview....
  13. nope, My yoga session I have to do as part of the anger management course. If you don't loose your temper with this you pass! I have been incorporating a few fuses between the rear lights and the loom by cutting off the bullet connectors and splicing Lucars on, that way I now connect them up below the dash with a fuse box in between, I will do the same for the front Headlights and horns, but by adding in a relay also. Plus a few more fuses where the original fusebox sits. In lieu of connecting them all up to the same spade I'll splice in a modern fusebox with a fuse for each circuit. Just in case you are wondering what I was doing in the picture, I was splicing in new wires to replace those who melted when we tested the horns and accidentally connect both ends of the same cable to the battery. Amazing how quick they melt! Luckily i had the old loom to borrow a few feet of correctly colorized wire from. Bah!

  15. next, I got 2 switches to cut out the overdrive from reverse but both came without the nut to secure them in place! Anyone know the thread and size so i can order separately? It's fairly coarse and big and I dont have anything remotely similar in my nut-box Some more pictures

  17. not suitable for publication! Too many empty beer bottles in view 😀 Today progress, Wire loom is in but not connected, heater, window wipers, clutch and brake pedals are all installed fuelline routed and attached from tank to carb. alternator in, and fanbelt installed. I don't have a fan yet, the old one being cracked I was going to install a Blue plastic one but the mounting pattern is different

  19. the black clips came from the kit, the shiney-ish ones are from a generic set I once bought with all kind of different sizes, none of which fit  ;D the fuel line ran just above the brake line, here installed

  21. more polishing of the exhausts....  ;D easy when you have manpower available A belated reply to Jutlandia, We used 2 kind of clips to attach the brake and fuelline, both metal ones. The fuel line came with single plastic clips that we could not figure out, so we did not use them, shaun attached it using tie-wrap and plastic tubing. The metal clips used are capable of taking 2 lines
