  1. On a four pot it's easy to throw it together bit by bit. I never needed to use a clutch alignment tool either. With the bigger gearbox I'd be tempted to do it as a combined unit! You will need to bonnet off or you'll bang the unit into something as your trying to avoid it banging into something else. Andy's axle stand tip is a good one as well. With everything stable life is easier. Same goes for removal of a four-pot lump if removing it by hand and rope. Those chassis come up a surprising amount as the weight comes off. Takes you a moment whilst holding in your farmers to realise what's happening.

    Which Radiator?

    It holds a ridiculous amount of water, something near 3L. When the thermostat starts to open the cooled water floods in and reduces the temperature of the coolant rather effectively. In winter I had to blank off near the whole thing. In the hottest days of summer the gauge read under 1/4 when moving even at slow speeds. Stop in traffic and it'd climb to half way quickly and sit there. Thermostat was 88°C and tested correctly.
  3. All suspension bridges have ping detectors as the wires are always breaking. I sobering thought. I wonder if we'll have to use the ferry next year. I wonder if they plan to put a big enough one into service!
  4. I bought some PowerTec leads for the Acclaim (options are limited) and they're perfectly fine and better quality than the two sets I've replaced in the 7 years I've owned it.

    Which Radiator?

    The advantage of the bigger rad is its extra capacity and therefore safety buffer. It won't make much difference in reality when everything is up to temperature. When I fitted the MX5 radiator though... oh boy. Without trying I can't see a wider Triumph radiator fitting in a GT6. The engine finishes further forward and height between the chassis and body reduces as you move that way. Probably why it's narrower, longer and sits through the chassis.
  6. My clutch was worn so I fitted a NoS B&B. It lasted two years (20-30k miles) and then the old LuK clutch was put back in which lasted a lot longer than its new replacement - including being fitted to a 1500 engine. Sometimes you have to weigh up the pros and cons of using a 60 year component and a new one made in a different (inferior?)  way.
  7. I'm running with over twice the horsepower of a standard Herald. My brakes discs are Maxtorq (worn .6mm since 2008 and I do a lot of miles) and currently using asbestos pads - normally I use 1144. The only time I've encountered brake fade is when on a track and after they cooled down they performed better... Use good fluid as well. I always used Halfords and found after a few weeks of use I didn't like the feel of my brakes. I've swapped to Pagid branded stuff and it's taken 18 months for me to start to notice it deteriorating. Unless you're driving like a twat, flooring it between each bend and massively exceeding the speed limits on a public road in this country then your pads shouldn't fade, no matter what horsepower you're running. Using it on track is a different matter entirely.
  8. As to headlight warning buzzers - I fitted one to the acclaim, powered by the sidelights and earthed on the door switch. Open the doors when the lights are on and the buzzer sounds.

  12. Mine was earthed on the bulkhead by the battery. The wiper and heater have their own earth wires so checking continuity there is easy. As it's both I'd almost rule out bad switches straight away. I've earthed almost everything individually on my car now. I'll count how many wires there are one day but I'd say it's well over 20 spread over three earthing points!

It will have one. Last I checked they said it took around 20 seconds worth of fuel to start a diesel so if you're stopped for less time it wastes it. All about cutting that pollution in cities with lots of start-stop traffic... I always turned that shite off except when I was bored because then it became a competition to see whether or not I could get it in gear and try to pull away before the car started. It wasn't a hard challenge.

  17. It does depend on the way the tyre is constructed, each is different.  I'd be going for 155 to minimise wobbly sidewall flex sensations.
  18. Check dashpot oil level. I always used atf fluid as well. It could have different spec springs as well. A quick comparison will tell you
  19. If it ain't moving properly then it ain't right. I've always found lifting the piston as you tighten the screws helps locate it so that it moves freely. For balancing I've always used a petrol can hose held up to my ear. This has often improved cars set up by someone who "knows what they're doing" and has "all the correct tools".
  20. Apparently you have to spend £500 a month to keep your trade account open, so I didn't get one... I did get a new Bosch battery though. Which is amusing as I've spent near a grand on Bosch tools recently!

  23. The plan is the same as every RBRR - try to take over th.... erm, use the Herald. Got to change a few things on it first, maybe raise the suspension and I have plans for the exhaust which will probably turn out to make no difference what so ever! It'd look... interesting... though.
  24. Cheers for that. 063 rings a bell but Halfords didn't appear to sell them last I checked (now on website). No where seems to do them in that high a specification though. Been suspecting the battery for a few months now, funny how you notice your own car is behaving slightly differently. It appears a cell has died over night but I've not fully checked yet. Been told I should be able to get a Euro Car Parts trade card, so I may be giving that a try at lunch time...
