smiddytom
Ive just obtained a selection of vitesse aluminium bumpers that have obviously been lying around somewhere for a while. They have the usual amount of scratches and tarnishing. Does anybody have any hints or tips as to what to use to get them looking as good as possible apart from a lot of patience.CheersTom
animator
I've got the same for my 13/60 ,I've been advised to get them polished up by a professional but not rechromed, as its easier to polish out any future scratches when theres no chrome on them. smiddytom
were they chromed originally then?
heraldcoupe
The bumpers were originally anodised, they were never chromed. Anodising gives a VERY hard protective surface, it will be a good man who can polish through this. The coating can be stripped, plenty of resources on how to do this online. Once the parts have been polished they should be re-anodised to reinstate the maintenance free finish. Un-anodised aluminium has an extremely soft surface which will oxidise very quickly. Cheers,Bill.
bxbodger
The over-riders are chromed steel, but the bumper bars are unchromed aluminium. They are actually anodised in a natural aluminium colour as far as I can work out, the anodising being to make them easier to maintain with a quick wipe over rather tham polishing when the cars were new.To get them looking really good you need to have the old anodised surface removed chemically so they can be re-anodised- have a look in your yellow pages, ther'll be someone local who can do it.But if you're happy to have a servicable and clean bumper and not after concours, then a tin of brasso and a bucket of elbow grease will remove the surface grime while retaining the patina of age, then wax them to keep them looking good. Deleted User
About £15-20 a section the last time we got the odd 50 sections stripped/polished/anodised.
