Spider
Just upgrading my MK1 2000 headlights to halogen units and wanted to remove the light switches and wiper and washer switches as they are a little intermittent, if working at all, so what is the easiest method of removal? johnconradlee
They undo from behind in a similar manner to the gauges. To make it easy would require years of training as a contortionist!
Spider
Hmm could be more skinned knuckles then, unless I can get some switch cleaner into the interior of the switch and work them back and forth to remove the oxidation from the contacts. Guppy916
Michael I bring bad news, I tried some many times to clean mine, with no luck I even took it apart, I ended up here in the end https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-UKC8647
Spider
Skinned knuckles for me then, will be rechecking all other connections before I know for definite that the switches are at fault.

nang
If you're going to fit relays I wouldn't be too worried about the light switch, It's only going to switch relay current( bugger all ) 🙂 Tony.
Spider
I will fit relays but the switches are either intermittent or non functioning, lights, wipers, washer, so a thorough going over of the loom and connections before switch removal. johnconradlee
You may be able to get away with a squirt of Servisol Super 10 depending on how bad the switches are. I took the headlight switch apart on my Mk1 2000. The contacts were green! A quick clean and they've been fine ever since.
Spider
Good to know they are savable. Headlight switch a little sticky but working..ish , washers working just sidelights and wiper to sort. currently working on refurb of front near side suspension, new spring and shock gaiter required so far. TedTaylor
Your first thing to do would be, as John says, try to ease any corrosion on the switch contact with an electrical contact cleaner, there are various ones available. The action of making the contacts move over each other with an appropriate lubrication usually does the trick especially if you are going to ease the electrical load on the contacts by using a relay. However if there is a requirement for originality then removal and stripping of switches may be necessary though if using a halogen bulb you have no real option but to use relays. One of the problems over removal of the switches, apart from needing to be a contortionist and ripped knuckles, from what I remember as Jon says is they are similar to the gauge fixing system and the small diameter studs which the nut that holds the switch in place is screwed down tends to get a layer of rust on it. With luck only a light layer but enough to make it stiff (so use WD40 or similar), but if heavy the screw is so hard to undo that the stud can pull from the plastic switch body and spoil it for re-use. Spider
Switches removed, smothered in isopropanol and worked the switches back and forth, success all lights and electrical items working, horn is a bit wimpy as is the windscreen washer pump. Just need to replace the switches and left hand instrument dial. I fear they may be a little trickier to get in than they were to take out. Swapped licence class from "not licenced" to historic, then asked about MOT exemption form and was told it was all done automatically and that was all I needed. So should be taxed and mot exempt now, will check on their website in a day or two. Should be on the road in the next couple of days. 😎
