Hey all. Im in the process of rebuilding my 2.5 with a view to taking it on the track, so I reckon an oil cooler is in order. From the Chris witor site he recommends a mocal 16 row for my needs. I ve seen that one, another "competition" one and of course the cheap ebay ones, obviously from very cheap to very dear. Problem is, they all look exactly the same. Are the dearer ones actually better or are they all made in the same factory in China and some have a different sticker slapped on and priced at three times more. I dont want to cheap out and have it wreck my engine, but at the same time I don't want to get ripped off on a brand sticker. Any advice from people that know better would be appreciated.
Also, I have a Chris Witor spin on oil filter adapter but stupidly bought the non oil cooler version. It has the bosses for the oil lines but nit drilled. Has anyone drilled and tapped one of these units to accept lines, ie is it all the same internally?
Cheers
Josh

The important thing here is Josh the 'safety' of your engine.

While Chris' prices may be higher than many he has a reputation to maintain and anything he sells must be of suitable quality (and he has 30 years experience of this sort of thing both as seller and user) so will not want to market poor quality stuff.  If something does go wrong you can at least go back to him ........ difficult with something bought off ebay ......!

Buy something of known/branded quality even if it is a bit more expensive.

While you could drill out and tap the holes in your oil filter adapter personally I would fit a new correct 'oil filter' spec. one.  Your non oil filter one should be not to difficult to sell through the Forum.  If the standard one is unused I expect Chris would allow you to return it and supply the oil filter type if you paid the difference.

I have a mocal cooler 16row.had it fitted for 20+years now so I assume it was made here, the current ones I couldn't say.

but if I was starting from scratch with a cooler now I would go for a water to oil intercooler, quicker warm up and a more stable temperature over oil to air types.

The difference between the "Oil Cooler" version and the "Standard" version is not just the drilling and tapping of the takeoffs. You also have to blank off an existing oilway.

Much better to get a correct one to start with.

Have a look at the Think Automotive site (purveyor of MoCol etc)

As Richard says, the non-oil cooler version has an internal drilling that internally shortcuts the pathway that would otherwise lead through the oil cooler.  If you drill and tap and fit the cooler you'll find you get little if any flow through the cooler.  Conversely, if you blank off the cooler connections on a "cooler" version you'll not get any oil to the oil galleries as it doesn't have this internal drilling, though there is no reason why why couldn't just have a short external link.

As Paul says, a wata cooled type
I ran one for yonks, an was v v good,
oil temp rarely moved, even when high revs, high load, slow speed, it stopped nearly constant.

A air cooled in thee,s circumstances, will let oil get alot lot hotter, as the air flow is just no there.

the 25 row i got noo, get oil hotter  under low speed, high load work, but ok when ont move, an normal driving as oil temp gauge shows

it was a 19 row cooler, bunged into a steel box with inlet /outlets for wata, and oil

im sure a tinkerous bloke like ye are can fiddleate some thing up,!!

and it sat here, same as where the new,n is noo, but may no be able,t on a Saloon

it got changed because of this

which did this to the water side
