Ben Hutchings
Hi, Can someone with a small chassis triumph please share a photo of their brake pedal and brake light switch setup please? Ideally I'd like to see how it sits in relation to the steering column. I've been helping a mate out with his Moss Malvern and there's some odd spacings, and I'd like to see how a 'factory' car has it set up before going any further. RobPearce
The pedals are all to the right of the steering column on the small chassis cars, so there's a clutch pedal between the column and the brake stuff. The brake light switch is on a bracket on the pedal hinge box. I don't think I've got a photo handy, unfortunately.
RobPearce
Oh, and the pedal boxes are spaced differently between Herald/Vitesse and Spitfire/GT6 - the latter being closer together, IIRC.
yorkshire_spam
I'll pop out to the garage later and see if I can get a photo from the Spitfire.

RobPearce
... and the steering column is just off-camera bottom left, yes?

yorkshire_spam
The red line added to this photo is the position of the steering column: If you want I can get another picture in the footwell next time I'm out in the garage with the pedals AND the steering column in? RobPearce
Well, it's Ben that wants the info, I was just butting in with a clarification because I thought he might want to know that 😝 Incidentally, something seems odd about your last photo. The wiper motor looks almost photoshopped. It's also the wrong type - it hangs outward like the single speed square body ones used on Mk1-3, but the bulkhead has a cable throttle and the fixing holes for a twin-speed (round body) type for a MkIV

On that photo it's hanging loose and out of place due to me trying to cure the rust underneath it.
RobPearce
Ah, right. Slightly out of focus with the cover plate lightly soiled... yes, that's why it looks odd. And now you mention it I can see the fixing bracket lying on the windscreen frame.
Ben Hutchings
Ok thanks for the pic @yorkshire_spam. Here's the setup on the Malvern, not ideal as it's already mashed the replacement brake switch 😅 I think we're going to relocate the switch so it's actuated directly by the master cylinder piston exactly the way it's done on a lot of TR3s. RobPearce
Hmm.... I would have said that trying to locate the steering column directly through the brake pedal is just asking for trouble! Moving the switch as you suggest will fix the immediate problem but if it were mine I would definitely be looking at options to move either the pedal to the right or the column to the left. Ben Hutchings
It is a bit crazy. I wonder if this is a ‘choice’ by the builder, or if it’s what was advised with the Malvern. I think we need @thescrapman to climb into the back of his shed and have a look 😂
thescrapman
Mine is a Monaco, and my column misses my pedals. As they were all different, it was down to how you built it. I would go for a hydraulic brake light switch in the pipe from master to first brass junction bit.
Jason
Has anyone tried a hydraulic switch? My Vitesse has an aftermarket pedal box with dual circuit brakes but the brake switch is very vulnerable to getting kicked I think - a hydraulic switch could be an answer - just wondering how reliable they are and where to site it (my hydraulics are all Aeroquip flexible lines)
thescrapman
Minis had hydraulic switches as standard I think, definitely the solution, just need to find somewhere to tap into the lines
drofgum
Jason, A hydraulic switch might be your way forward, but I'm not a fan of them. They are one more place to develop a leak in the system. If you go hydraulic, substituting a four way hydraulic fitting for the three way where the front brake lines split would give you the extra port for the switch.
