Hi Jessica,
There aren't bolts as such. Each of the three locating points has a 1/4" stud, secured in the roof by a locknut. The studs protrude through the rear deck and are held by nuts & washers. Getting the angle right for putting studs or bolts up through the deck is going to be pretty difficult, I guess you've already discovered this! It might be easier with over-long studs, then cut them to length afterwards. You may be able to lift the back end enough to get a spanner on to tighten the locknuts, not something I've tried though. Otherwise the roof might have to come off to put in some new studs.
The earliest Heralds had bolts at the back, quickly changed to studs in production, presumably to make installation easier.
