Hi, does anyone know what current is taken by this solenoid?

As your sig says you have a 1500 Spit I assume you have a J-type OD fitted.  These take ~ 2A so no relay needed (though you could use one if you wanted).

lim replacing the gear knob with another where I intend to mount an Illuminatied

push button switch which is rated to 3A hence my question.

i have a small 10A relay that I could use if I get any issues.

If D-type then about 20A pull and 1/2 A hold I think.

I've put a relay on my OD (spit 1500 - j-type od) as every 3 to 6 months the gear lever switch went kaput... 

Now still works with the same after nearly 2 years.
