CharlieB
I need to replace the front oil seal on my diff. How can I tell if it has a collapsible spacer or shims before I remove the nut. It's a 3.89 & the nut has pink paint on it no: FH65334
Clive
I "think" the 3.89 are shims.

Nick Jones
As original the collapsible spacer diffs had a pressed metal cap over the pinion nut. Any collapsible spacer can (and should IMO) be rebuilt with shims. I don't think you can generalise on ratios; some 3.89s and 3.27s could have collapsibe spacer and many 3.63 will, but not all. Don't think any 4.11 would have but don't really know!NickEdit, to change the seal you mark the relative positions of nut and shaft (centre pop or similar). Then count the turns (exactly!!) to come off. Refit the same turns until the marks match..... if you dare!
CharlieB
Ok that's pretty conclusive, thanks. I've also found one output shaft has a lot of end float so I suppose that means new output bearings as well, ho hum.
