Herald Halfshaft Bearings

Has anyone any experience of changing Herald halfshaft bearings? When I had my first Herald in the 70's it was just a matter of going to your local breakers yard and getting a complete serviceable halfshaft from the nearest wreck. This luxury no longer exists, and so I'm faced with having to renew the bearings.  Assuming I can remove the hub (something I tried but never could do in the past - broke my dad's puller), is it a difficult job, and do I need any other specialist tools?

You need the specialist puller; some clubs/businesses sell them, some areas own them and rent them to members etc.

Alternatively Canley Classics do an exchange scheme (I think) with a new half shaft.

If the bearings have gone you may well find the halfshaft is shot.

Almost certainly! The inside bearing has no inner race, the needles run directly on the halfshaft. By the time the inner bearing is noisy, the needles will have marked the surface of the shaft.
If you're very lucky the outer bearing alone will be worn, but I've yet to see that happen in practice,
Cheers,
Bill.

Thanks Guys, I had a feeling that I might not like the answer. Canley Classics do offer a replacement halfshaft assembly, but is the bare halfshaft new? It must take some serious machining to make one of those. I didn't think we did that in our country only more thanks to the eighties government! Sorry, I'm not political, just sad to had seen the demise of great British industry!

i recently went this route with canleys half shafts....i had new drums, cylinders, shoes, flexis fitted at the same time...not the cheapest way to do things ....but pretty much fit and forget....i looked at it this way....weve had the 1360 since 91 spent a few quid here and there...we needed to do something as the rear end was shafted(excuse the pun) whilst dave was sorting the stuff for me i was cleaning and painting the uprights and the control arms....fitted new bushes etc.....got everthing back from dave and it all just fitted with ease.....new bolts etc helps...and the price Vs my time and effort doing it myself was an absolute bargain......plus my back end looks like new and its been built with fantastic parts and a high standard of build.....

i highly recommend canleys ;D ;D ;D
