Marshal's Track Days

Did you know that MotorSport Vision, which owns Brands Hatch and other UK circuits, organised a number of Marshal's Track Days last year, and have some more booked for next winter?

These are the idea of Dr.Jonathan Palmer, ex-F1 driver. now MSV MD and thoroughly good bloke, as a 'thank you' to marshals.  The original format was that marshals drove their own cars, but there was not a great response to that, so it was extended to racers who would offer free passenger rides to marshals.  In return, the drivers get a FREE Track Day, just as do the marshals, and there has been a good,  but not overwhelming response.

Binnington and I took his SuperSix to Oulton last year, and had a great time  - as the next garage was occupied by a Le Mans prototype Osprey, they were queueing up there and ignoring us.  So we had an open track to oursleves!

Dates for this winter include:
Oulton Park...Tuesday 21/11/06
Snetterton...Wednesday 20/12/06
Brands Hatch...Tuesday 16/01/07
Cadwell Park...Tuesday 27/02/07

The requirements seem to be a car with more than one seat and a driver willing to drive with spirit and give their marshal passengers a thrill.  Sounds like CT territory to me!

The Silverback now has a second seat, for such occasaions and I will be at Oulton this November.  A small Spitfire Squadron at that or another of these events would be good for Triumph and good fun too!

All,
Further to the above, I have had a long correspondence with the Marshal's Club and MSV.  I can now confirm what are the conditions that MSV put on participants.

First, they must do so in a car that has passenger seats.
Not a problem for most CT members.
Then, the driver must hold an MSA competition licence.
BUT DON'T STOP READING!
The MotorSports Association that governs most forms of motorsport in the UK has a range of licences, at a range of prices.
A National 'B' Race licence costs £45, but also needs you to take a one day training course that can cost £350.
You can buy a 'Non-Race Clubman' licence for only £16, and no course!
Compare that with the usual cost of a track day  - £90 minimum

MSV confirm to me that such a licence will be acceptable, so you DON'T have to be a racer to take advantage of this splendid offer, and to help pay back the gallant marshals.

To get your MSA licence, go to the MSA webpage for 'Competitors/ Forms': http://www.msauk.org/site/cms/contentViewArticle.a...
Click on: 2006 Competition Licence Application Form.
You can print the form out and write in your details, or complete it on screen and then print it out.
Note that you do NOT need a doctor's medical report unless you are over 45 years old.
Send it in to the MSA with your cheque for £16, and you will have an MSA Competition Licence!

Last year at Oulton, many of the marshals there were fascinated by Jon's SuperSix - it was so different to all the other, modern cars there.
I think that a 'Spitfire Squadron' or 'Team Triumph' at any or all of these events could only do Triumph good.
And you will have a ball too!

I will gladly coordinate the Oulton Park event, if that is necessary.
Anyone who wants to take part please let me know.

See you there!
John
PS I exopect that helmets will be required too, like most track days, but they may be available for hire at the track.  If you don't have one, ask the circuit beforehand.  J.

All,
My apologies, I haven't been keeping this thread up to date.
Please see the thread in the TSSC Motorsport forum for the full Monty, as it were.

Re: previous post there:
George, stick the of end wrong the have you.
MSV wanted drivers to have 'an MSA licence' to satisfy their insurers.
What type of licence and what it is for is irrelevant.

Please also note:
Register with Stephen Green before the day (see other thread)
Remember, it's for the marshals - give them as many rides as you can. No harm in some jollies for yourself and friends, but jolly a marshal first!
For new track dayers, you will need to 'sign on' at the race office before you go out. This will remove any responsibility for accidents from the organisers and put it squarely on you. At that time, you will need to show your MSA licence AND road driving licence.
Helmets will be worn.
Hooligans will be expelled (I don't really have to tell Triumpheros that, do I?)
Have a good time!

John

PS If you plan to go to the Oulton event, please let me know. I'd love to have a flight of Spitfires as fighter escort on the Silverback, my Lancaster bomber! J
