The problem with the cards was that we were going through the night and most of the petrol stations were closed, and almost all the 24 hr petrol stations that were open were automatic credit card only no cashier, and didn't accept english cards, we tried all the credit/debit cards we had, so euros wouldn't be very useful . James and Craig ended up giving a frenchman they found 20 euros and got him to put the petrol on his card.

With a lot of UK issued credit & debit cards now, you need to advise the card company or your bank that you will be using it abroad BEFORE you go - usually they will want to know the dates you are abroad & the countries you intend to visit(!).

It's an anti fraud measure but it seems not to be widely known or indeed widely publicised by the card issuers. If you do this you should have no problems using the card.

Not much help now but bear it in mind for the next 10CR! Or your next holiday.

That's right - I made reference to two petol stations we know of from 2003 which are manned.

A Shell station south od reims and a petrol station at Feldkirk in Austria.

If anyone found any others please let me know so we can include them in the next roadbook - a location would be nice, ideally a tulip diagram!
