1970_1200_Herald
Hello,I am re-building a scrapper from the chassis up and I would like to know if anyone out there has ever successfully fabricated independent rear shocks onto a Herald/Vitesse?Any pictures would be a great help. heraldcoupe
I'm not really sure what you mean by that - which aspects of the current system are you looking to eliminate? There are virtually off-the-shelf Triumph setups which eliminate the swing axle, while there have been occasional radical attempts to use coilover spring/damper units in place of the existing spring arrangement. Cheers,Bill.

1970_1200_Herald
Are there any pictures or threads for previous attempts? I'd quite like not to make any mistakes which have already been tried before
herald948
Well, there's always this as one possibility, although it makes almost no sense to me (especially for the price) and -- despite the description -- it's no more a "true" independent suspension than what's there now:http://prirace.com/page/triumph-spitfire-independent-
GT6
Maybe give something like this a nudge http://club.triumph.org.uk/cgi-bin/forum10/Blah.pl/Blah.pl?m-1258933165/s-all/

If you're happy going that route, then the linked thread from GT6 shows a far more purposeful installation,Cheers,Bill.
1970_1200_Herald
Hmm, that kit for the Spitfire seems like a lot of effort for no real return. I like the GT6 work, but it looks a little busy. The link below shows a TR4 modified chassis with a Ford rear axle, I like the simplicity and the lookhttp://www.britishv8.org/articles/fastcars-tr6-frame.htm
thescrapman
Perhaps you need to look at what the Standard Gazelles ended up as in India.Live axle from a Toledo grafted under a Herald Chassis.Very simple!CheersColin
junkuser
I did consider changing to rear axle set-up to a deDion type of arrangement as it keeps the wheels parallel with less un-sprung weight than a live axle. (Updating to a design from about 1900)Anyone tried this?
Nick Jones
Rotoflex rear from a Vitesse or GT6 with CV shafts is about the best available without radical mods. Some variations possible with MGF/R100 vertical links. There are a couple of lengthy threads on this subject on the Sideways forum and I'll hunt them down and link them - later.Nick
