Paul_F Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Hello, I am disassembling the front strut on a 1980 FHC. I have removed the nut OK, but the mounting cone (UKC7495) is stuck. Can someone confirm that it should just 'lift off' (in true Haynes tradition) rather than unscrew. I am loathed to use a large persuader in case it is screwed on... Thanks Paul Quote
Beans Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 The cone indeed should drop out easily, though they have a tendency to bond to the rubber of the top strut mounting rubber over time. So a little persuasion from the top with a piece of wood and a hammer might be needed ... Quote
Paul_F Posted February 8, 2020 Author Posted February 8, 2020 Great, thanks for the confirmation. It took a lot banging, but it is off now - corrosion between the aluminium of the cone and the steel of the damper I think. Some copper grease on reassembly I think... Quote
RobPearce Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I'm not sure how effective the copper grease would be on that - there are better alternatives but I can't remember what any of them are called right now. Still, definitely worth using something. Quote
sparky_spit Posted February 9, 2020 Posted February 9, 2020 Ah... the classic Haynes phrase "Tap gently with a hide-faced mallet".... Quote
Beans Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 I have to agree with Rob, copper grease is a conductor. So that won't help. Better to use a non conductive rubber friendly grease. Quote
