  1. Should be minimal end float, max about 6 thou. More than this means crankshaft thrust washers are knackered. Urgent action required or your engine will soon be  scrap.

  3. A more drastic solution is to hacksaw through the bottom tube and the bolt, then repair the tube later. Ask me how I know...
  4. Can confirm what Bill says about the top fixings as I took the roof off my Vitesse 3 days ago. I did not find a rivet, just a bolt at the bottom of each side. One came undone easily, the other, distinctly non-standard, had to be drilled out. Cheers, Dave.
  5. The Canley instructions are fine, but make sure you start wth a pilot hole, then file it out to size ensuring that the hole sides are flat to match the lock barrel so that the lock itself cannot turn in the hole. Cheers, Dave.
  6. I Paudman is correct. The stays bend downwards in the middle as the bonnet is closed. Springs or no springs , doesn't seem to matter. Cheers, Dave.
  7. Hi Wimpus. Chic Doig is a long established Triumph specialist. Anything you buy from him should be ok. Cheers, Dave.
  8. Glad I was right.. Bitter experience pays! Cheers, Dave (at least it's relatively cheap and simple to fix.) Happy motoring.
  9. Yes, but make your own out of some thin steel, it's cheaper.

  11. Who rebuilt the engine and did they Re- torque the head after initially warming up the engine? Also, according to my manual, the head should be re-torqued after 500 miles. Hope this helps.
  12. Head gasket failure between cylinders 1 and 2 ?
  13. Rivets there are not standard. Cheers , Dave
  14. Canley Classics list the T Knob choke cable as CC15, Price £12.75, available to order. Don't know whether that is for 13/60 or Vitesse, or Both! Cheers, Dave.
  15. Suggest you ask Canleys. They Know a lot! Cheers, Dave.

  17. Anybody know what happens if you put the clutch plate in the wrong way round? Just a thought. Cheers, Dave.
  18. If you go to the Canley Classics website, technical info section, it lists the triumph models and required propshaft lengths. Cheers, Dave.
  19. I am not sure that the Vitesse Mk 2 engines are the same as the GT6. I believe the Vitesse always had flat top pistons whereas the GT6 had domed pistons. I've read that the Vitesse Mk2 had the best camshaft that Triumph produced. The GT6 was detuned for the USA, I believe. I've owned both 2litre and Mk2 Vitesses and the earlier 2 litre gave a smooth progressive shove on acceleration, but the Mk2 gave a sudden shove in the back as it came on cam at about 3500 rpm, then revved cleanly up to the red line of 6000 rpm, in any gear!
  20. Thanks Clive, they look as though they are the ones I've got. I prefer the Minilite style alloys ( 5J x 13 and 165/80 s ) I have on my 13/60. Cheers Dave.
  21. My Vitesse is on 175/70 x 14 . the wheels look similar to Spitfire "holey" types but 14 inch diameter with a deeper offset so the tyres don't protrude beyond the arches. I don't know what they are. They are steel. Anyone any ideas?
  22. PS. When you lift the roof off the rear side windows will fall out! Have someone to catch them, they are only available second hand.
  23. Yes. If I remember correctly because I haven't done it for since 1978, it is 7 bolts. 2 above the front screen (remove sun visors), 2 below the uprights from the waist rail to the roof , 3 accessible from the boot from rear of roof panel where it meets the boot panel. As the joints are all sealed with rubber seals and mastic, it may take some unsticking. I suggest you get a workshop manual, available for about £25.
  24. ps The gearbox uses the same stuff, as do the front trunnions.
