  1. Useful info re engine mounting options: http://www.chriswitor.com/cw_technical/engine%20mounting%20options.pdf

If someone really wants to get into your engine bay all they need to do apply a bit of brute force to the bonnet hinge and the locks (and the bonnet) just bend. As me how I know  :'( If you're using the bonnet locks to stop the hinges flipping open what I also found is that the locks slowly distort over time due to the force of the hinges trying to open themselves and after a few years the bonnet locks become too worn and loose to be of any use. Best things I've found for a quick solution to the hinges flipping open if you can't fix it any other way are diverdans55s brackets and clips mentioned by DougP. I'll be having another good look at mine between now and the Spit foinf back on the road in Spring with John's and esxefi's suggestions in mind - IMHO reckon they're on to something.
  4. Lloyd, we have 1 x Mk 2 Saloon which as you know is in the process of getting the new wings that I have had for quite a while fitted. Unless I have an accident this car shouldn't need wings doing again - in my lifetime anyway ??) No plans to add another Saloon to the menagerie - unless I happen to chance upon a facelift Mk2 PI that I just can't ignore ;D
  5. Something rather odd happened this week - I added the Saloon back onto the insurance   Somewhat premature it has to be said A sign I think that something deep down in my psyche is doing its best to get me going again Really enjoyed the day at Conon Bridge. First time I've signed the road books and I had no idea - to use mikeyb's words from another thread - how manic it can be.

  7. Fantastic. I didn't see many of the cars this time round - really only those that arrived at Conon Bridge before the control opened. But I did see the Renown when it arrived and I watched it leave - and pointed them in the right direction :) I'm chuffed to bits that they made it.
  8. I'm saying nothing. What I need to do for 2016 is exactly what I had intended to do for 2014
  9. 4058 wrote:And especially to the chap in the discovery who see us arriving late at one checkpoint up Norf (I forgot wich one, I will ask dirk) he turned round and drove the few miles back to sign our book! Top man. That was John Millidge at John O'Groats. John mentioned when we were chatting to him at Conon Bridge that he'd turned back to a sign a road book.
  10. Prior to Conon Bridge the retirements we knew about were 28, 50, 72, 81, 111, 116 and 119. The only other cars we didn't see at Conon Bridge were 5 and 84. The Renown was running about an hour late. Suffering from a minor fuel leak but was running OK otherwise. They must have taken the A9 south rather than the run through Glencoe to save time cause I saw them turning into Broxden Services at about 5.30pm on my way home.
  11. Workshop manual for 1500 Spit says 7.25 gallons = 33 litres. Sounds like there was a few litres sloshing about in the bottom of the tank!

    engine?

Oooooooo - I think you might very well be right  ;)

  14. It's just a personal thing Colin, but after the 400 mile drive to the start is factored in I'm not comfortable with the thought of doing 48 hours non-stop in a two seater. If I was able to work it out so that I could get down a couple of days early and chill out before setting off again I'd be OK with it - but that's not going to be possible this year unfortunately  :(
  15. Too much as it turns out  :'( as a result of being unable to do any proper work on the cars since the end of October. Effectively, I'm six months behind where I planned to be with the Saloon - it should have been going for painting about now, it still hasn't got any of the new panels on it yet  :-/ I'm left wondering if Car 47 has set a record for the earliest ever call-off  :B  ??)

I changed from 330lb fronts to stiffer jobbies lat year -- I should have done it years ago... :B (PS I have a no-longer-used pair of Moss 330lb springs sitting in the garage which are free to good home...  :)) 3815 wrote:Hi Tim, mines a mk3. Are the shins for the front suspension to assist with the wheel alignment? The shims Tim are referring to are used on non-rotoflex cars for rear wheel alignment. Part number 133070, see reproduction of parts catalogue on Canley's web site http://www.canleyclassics.com/?xhtml=xhtml/diagram/gt6mkiiiroadspringanddamper.html&xhtmlcatalogue=xhtml/catalogue/gt6mkiii.html&category=axlessuspensiondriveshaftsandwheels&xsl=diagram.xsl (Rotoflex cars have an adjustable tie-rod so don't need shims.)

Of the 100+ small chassis Triumphs I've owned, as well as countless others I've worked on, I've yet to see a Trunnion which lacks a steel disc in it's base. Interesting one this. My recollection is that the OE trunnions I was getting from main dealers in the 1980s were solid - when I was re-Triumphing ;D in the early noughties I remember being a bit miffed when I noticed the steel disc... :X It was a long time ago and I was young and fiddling with cars for the first time so I'm quite prepared to believe I was mistaken about the original trunnions but it's odd that my reaction back in 2001 or thereabouts - which I remember quite clearly - was so strong.

I was going to PM you my mobile number anyway for use in the event that it's proving difficult to find each other at Stoneleigh ;D but there's really no need to call me especially about this.
  19. MikeyB wrote: if I have a middle sill with nose, do I still need a nose on an outer? Yes - it's the part of both sills that are located behind the lower front wing. If both the outer and middle sills have gone here (mine have!) you'll need both middle and outer sills with the extensions. It's probably not too difficult to fabricate the middle sill extension if you're good with sort of thing but I'm not so I just got full sills with extensions  :)

The second time we visited we got there first time using Harmans as a "landmark"  :)
  21. 8017 wrote:So can any one give me the address post code of Canley classics please ;) Be warned - it may not be much help  :-/ First time we visited we had to circle round three times before we managed to figure out where Slimboy's emporium is :B  :B   ;D

  23. LLoyd, At that price I'll take an O/S middle sill strengthener please and I'll take it as soon as you can get it to me. I'll PM you to confirm. As noted elsewhere I already have a repro O/S middle sill strengthener but comparing it to the OE N/S sill strengthener I managed to find I'm not too enamoured with it. When I get round to doing the O/S I'll use the best one of the two.
  24. Lloyd - are the middle strengtheners repair sections or full sills (and with/without the nose piece) etc?
  25. 5005 wrote:the bit that has me scratching my head, is the rear top upswept curve where it meets the A post, you said its fits well, the aftermarket ones didnt, perhaps your car is bent   LOL. Or I could be deluding myself - it wouldn't be the first time ;D I suppose the proof will be when it comes to actually fitting them rather than just tinkering with them ... but they do look good on trial fit  :-/
